A couple things, first of all, if a longer swingarm doesnt help any, then why when you see in dirtwheels some $20,000 banshee built for sand drags do they have like a +8" swingarm? Is it cause they spent all that money to make it slow in a sand drag? I somehow doubt it!
With that covered...I have an 86R, and raced a buddies 400ex. We are probably about the same as far as riding ability. I had a pual Turner pipe and FMF silencer, carbon reeds and some mild porting, mostly for top end. He had a WB e-series slip on.

We raced down a paved road, and he got me on teh jump EVERY time. About a bike length, we would be even about 2nd gear, then ran DEAD even until I hit 6th and he was out of gears.
Now you can all say, I am full of **** and the worst rider in the world, and its not going to bother me any cause I know what happened. It wasnt a one time thing, we raced 4 times and it happened the same way every time.

So reference the sprocket questions which one do you want a 14 front or a 16 or should you go down in the rear down in the rear a couple of teeth so its not so much of a jump the sprocket question for the 400 ex which is the best, and if you go smaller in the front how much will you lose on the top end.

alright I admit it, I was wrong, but where I live the dirt is hard, and you dont get ANY traction at all... I just wasnt thinking about the sand.

With the 16 tooth front sprocket on a 400ex, you have to lose your stock case saver. Which isnt that big a deal, something to think about. I have a 12 tooth for my R (13 is stock) and I have to shift ALL THE TIME when riding with that thing, its just too short of a gear ratio for anything but REAL REAL REAL small fair tracks we have sometimes around here.

Are you wanting more top end, or low end power? If you wanted more top end, I would go ahead and go with say a 2 tooth smaller rear sprocket, if you want low end, go with a 2 tooth larger rear. I have been told that one tooth in front is 4 teeth in rear. If the 2 teeth isnt enough then get a new front.

Billy might beat you on sand but get him on wet grass and he has no chance
