Replace Warn winch cable ?
#1
Hi All.. I had to use my winch today to get over a log jam and when I was reeling it in after it got me over the fallen logs I noticed several of the cable threads had parted about 8ft from the hook end.
I havn't decided on whether to replace the whole cable or just cut off the bad area. Where is a good place to get repacement cable and what type of connector should be used as the factory on looks pressed on? I'm sure this isn't the 1st post on this and won't be the last but, any info would be apprecaited..

Warn uses standard 3/16" 7x19 wire wrap-aircraft wire rope -or whatever they call it. You can buy this at any hardware store, or farm/ranch outfit, places like that by the foot. I don't remember the price, but I bought an extra 100' section of it, with a couple hooks and cable clamps for around $35.00, which I use rigged up with a ****** block for long pulls.
If it's just the first 8', and you don't normally run your winch out to the full 50' length, you'll be just fine cutting off the bad part, then clamping the hook back on the end of the remaining 42' of rope. Or, if you would rather, you can just go buy another 50' section, replace that with the wire rope already on your winch, then cut off the bad section of the old rope, put a couple hooks on it, then save it in your gear bag for extra long pulls-like I have the 100' length for. Works great, you never know when you need extra cable! If you don't have one already, pick up a good ****** block too rated at minimum of 5,000 lbs., or better. I got mine through AW direct for around $30, rated at 9,000 lbs., and like the winch, it's worth it's weight in gold.
Best of Luck,
Mike

Thanks for the reply. I just got out of the hospital tonight and will have tomorrow free to check out the local stores. I did check 1 store last weekend and all they had was the plastic coated cable which i don't feel would work very well in the winch but might be a good way to go for the extra cable w/hooks you mentioned. They had the bolt together clamps but,I wasn't sure if they were proper to use in a 2000lb winch. Thanks again and will post what i find : )
