I have 00 400ex its all stock except for rev kit and a K&n filter.why in the world is the exhaust up near the header pipe glowing red are these bikes that lean and if thats the problem and they are that lean it seams that the choke would help but it just dies when you run the choke,I remember reading some time back that someone was having this same problem i was wondering what the cause was for this. All help would be much appreciated. Thanks for the info.

Mine does it, My friends does it and everyone I've talk to says theres does it to. Its perfectly normal. Why do the headers glow red you ask, because they are very hot. A word of advise don't touch them when they are red, unless you like third degree burns lol.

Did you rejet after you put your K&N filter on? These bikes shouldn't run hot enough to make the headpipes glow red...mine never had, but I'm a perfectionist about jetting.

I was told by my dealer when I was looking for a quad that the header pipe is made from a thin material that will glow red before a thicker head pipe will and it holds that heat in for a little more power.

Well, the dealers obviously a bonehead as you want it to stay cool. Thats why ceramic coatings are effective, the help to keep the heat moving through the pipe rather than warming the pipe itself. I dont know how effective it really is but imagine anything is beneficial. If you put a piece of metal in a flame its going to get hot, if the material is fairly think it will glow quite easily. Pull the header pipe off of the head and flames will shoot out of it, usually blue which indicate pretty hot fuego! I wouldnt be to concerned about it, if so buy an aftermarket header pipe, you should gain a little power and they probably wont light up anymore.

Wouldnt backfires through the pipe be indicative of a rich mixture which is allowing excess fuel to be ignited in the exhaust?
