I've never done any pulling myself but I've watched a few. I'm curious about the comment that the Ruby has a limited slip front end and to keep most of your weight out back because of it. That makes almost no sense to me what so ever?

Anyways, as most have stated I would roll into it a very short ways and then nail it. The big guys do it this way. I cant remember what exactly they called it but when the tires are spinning like that it creates friction, the dirt being moved over the dirt below creates more traction than the tire to the dirt. I think they call it friction pulling actually, you may want to try a search on that (like on google) to see if you get any results. I dont know what kind of wheel speed the Ruby is capable of generating but maybe you'll be able to try something like that. Best of luck and dont let a Polaris take you!

I have never pulled, but I have brought up a few cords of wood from our lower property with my ATV trailer. I put two 100lb sacks of concrete on the front rack to keep things from climbing skyward, as the hill I had to pull the wood up was very steep and loose (flipped a bronco II on it) and as I started up the hill I lost traction, one front tire spun but the other didnt as the AP diff has a torque transfer limit also. Thats why I said to keep most weight back as the rear is a strait axle and wouldnt suffer from a "lazy" tire.

I also would use low range ESP to pull with a Ruby. I tried last fall and did low range D1 and it upshifted, but as the weight shifted forward on the sled and caused the machine to need more power the quad did not downshift.

Thanks for the advice. Using ESP mode makes sense. I'm going to try to contact Texmud for his input as well. I really want to win this so I don't have to listen to the Polaris beat Honda stuff. I'm open to any more suggestions. The pull is sept. 4th. I'll come back and let you know how I did. Thanks again!!!!

yeah, and body english makes a huge difference. When you start spinning transfer your weight to whatever front tire is spinning the most and keep it pinned! Just took the XR out on a short 30 mile ride above the house, ya know after rideing the rubi the XR feels like a mini bike now!

in esp mode you can shift without letting off the gas. the book say you shouldn't do it but it doesn't grind or anything when you do it... that way you keep the power going.

The first thing I would do is make sure the throttle cable has had the slack taken out. I have had two Rubicons and both of them had as much slack as possible from the factory. Use your owners manual to adjust it properly. This makes a big difference in response and torque. I don't know if the motor is actually wide open without this throttle adjustment but I don't believe it is . If you pull in auto low to make it downshift again I believe you have to let off the throttle for a split second and then gun it again. You might want to check that out before the actual competition. I know mine(stock)in low auto will sit on hard packed dirt and dig 4 holes without bogging the motor down as long as I don't spin them fast enough to cause it to start shifting up. I was removing a large tree limb when I discovered that. It seems when you let off throttle it downshifts and when you re-throttle it picks the proper ratio for that speed. I would say in low auto keep the tires spinning as little as possible as long as your still moving. If you use low esp naturally do it as you would any other quad. Good luck and let us know how it comes out.
