YOUR SUPPOSE TO BE BUYING THIS DOODS 400EX THAT IS SMOKING A LITTLE....THAT MEANS ITS BURNING OIL (RINGS MIGHT NOT HAVE SEALED) SO I WOULDNT BUY IT IF I WERE U . MY FRIEND JUST HAD TO REBUILD HIS MOTOR BECAUSE IT WAS PUFFING A BIT OF BLUE SMOKE (BURNING OIL) AND HIS IS NOT EVEN 5 MONTHS OLD.

WORD OF ADVICE 2 STROKES SMOKE 4 STROKES SHOULDNT.. HEHE

from what I no about the 400ex it is probably the valve stem seals ...the honda runs hot and hardens the seals ...if your not very familar with the honda motor do not do this your self ...any way you have to take your top end apart hone it and rering it 2 prolly 3-4 hondoo to do it at the shop

i would try to run a thicker oil in it. try mobil one 15w-50. i have heard this cures that problem in the 400ex.

That "fixes" the problem but doesn't "cure" it. Chances are it still won't have good compression.

Almost ever 400ex I've seen , smells like its buring oil or it smokes a little. Its just the first sign that you need an oil change.

i don't wanna contradict you EX but my 400 needs an oil change and it doesn't smoke at all.

I agree with juggalo, I have went way past due for an oil change before and it didn't puff one puff of smoke!!! Mudman, I would do what Pooh said, offer him less money for it. Chances are that all it is is the piston rings are bad and that could be replaced. I would offer him like $200-$300 less for it so you can get it fixed.
