How many teeth can you add/remove from your sprokets before you need to add/remove links on the chain?

ie, if you add a tooth to the front, do u need another link, or will the stock chain still fit, after adjusting it...

From what I am told (haven't tried it yet), you can go up one tooth on the front sproket (15 to a 16) without having to add links. I would assume you could go down one also, but it may depend on how stretched your chain is.

I went down a tooth in the front, and didn't have to take out any links. I did get a master link for my chain, though, cuz I took it off to clean it really well.

So who can you order non-standard sprokets from via the web?

Neither Rocky Mnt., Motoman nor Carbidesmotoworld has 16T sprokets for a 400EX...

Rocky Mountain ATV actually has the 16tooth sprocket in their catalog, they just don't list it on their website for some reason. If you don't have a catalog, I would give them a call to order it.

I went +2 without adding anything. I was almost at the end of the adjustments (because the chain was originally a little long), and added a 16 teeth couter sprocket. It brought me back in the first 1/3 of the adjustments.
