250r exhaust!
#1
ok, i just recently purchased an 86 trx 250r and it has engine mods big time (built for racing). well the problem is, is that there already is a paul turner (rev)pipe and silencer (fatboy), but the silencer is shot and the pipe is all rust. but the pipe was cleaned and looks pretty nice. the question is what kind of silencer would mactch up with the paul turner for maximum performance. FMF, CT racing, or should i just invest in another paul turner silencer???? but it sure is shot though.... what do you guys recamend? or do i go out and buy a whole new exhaust system? whats your thoughts on this?

its been my experience that silencers don't really matter a whole lot. I've used the same FMF ISDE quiet silencer on about 5 pipes...Graydon, Paul Turner, FMF, PC, LRD, and my ESR TRX 5. If you want a new exhaust system, it would be a good time to get one, however, if you want to use what you have now, then just get a silencer.

Duncan Racing sells a Fatboy silencer rebuild/quiet-down kit for about 20 or 30 bucks. It is a new core, a new chrome turned-down tip, repacking material, and a couple of stickers. Since the body of the silencer is aluminum I bet it is ok. I installed this kit on mine and it is as good as new and quieter too (just a little).
As far as the pipe, if it isn't dented and doesn't have any holes in it just sand blast it then paint it with stove paint and it will be fine. If there is significant carbon buildup inside you can take it to a radiator shop and get it hot tanked to remove the carbon. My local radiator shop charges me $5 for this.
