HElp, my buddies forman runs, topped out, at 46mph. He said it should run in the 50's. What could be wrong?

Hey Your Buddy's machine is right on the money maybe even better than some 450's, I bought one a 2001 because people on this Forum and other information I found had nothing but praise for it, but I could only put up with it for 3 months, it was a slug, tippy on off Camber situations, hard to steer, engine was noisy, paint was chipping off the frame all over. I Don't mean to slam Honda, my wife has had a Rancher for over a year and with the exception of the 2 recalls it's been fine, but I think the Foreman 450 is Utility Quad and nothing else!

Hello Balster96,

I just sold my brother-in-law my 2000 450ES. He was just telling me last week that it would go over 45mph no matter what. Not that big of deal as we usally ride slow, but he was a little surprised.

These are built for torque and low-end grunt. To speed one up, get an unlocking front differential from HiLifter, and put all those ponies to the rear wheels. 2/4wd is standard on 2002 450s.

OOPS, read my last post and I misspoke. That would be an unlocking front driveshaft from HiLifter. Must be a lack of oxygen up here.

Bore size is generally not a very good indicator of speed. It all depends on how the machine is geared. If the machine is primarily a utility quad (the Foreman 450 and 400 are) it is geared very low. Just look at how low the first gear is in the 450. You go through it in about 2 seconds! The Rancher is only a 350 but it is geared higher so that it is actually sportier than the Foreman. Perhaps the fastest non-sport quads out there are the Polaris Sportsman H.O. and the Grizz. I don't know how fast the Rubicon is.
