I have a 2001 400EX that is pretty noisy. The rockers seem to make a lot of noise especially after riding for a while. Almost as if its running outta oil(its not though). The valve were supposedly adjusted by my dealer just a few months ago. It didn't make a difference. It's not a big deal, I was just wondering if it was just me or if other machines do the same thing.....

Well if they were adjusted a few months ago they should be adjusted again by now. My X gets real noisey when the valves need adjusting.

Naaa, its only had 2 tanks of gas thru it since then. Actually, I had heard from a few riders that the decompression lobe on the cam has been either installed incorrectly or it has stuck on a few occasions on their rides. I was kinda hoping to hear from other riders across the country to see if this is happening to them or if the riders I talked to are just full of it. I'd hate to tear into the top end if I didn't have to. I guess the other option is to check the clearances and see if the dealer did, indeed, actually adjust them properly or if they adjusted them at all?.... Thanks for responding!

The rockers are supposed to be the weak link in the head. Mine started making some pretty loud nouses after I rode it extreamly hard in the sand. My guess is that riding it at very high rpm's at low speed (conditions you run into when carvig bowls) causes enough heat & stress to wear the rockers. I also had my valves adjusted with no effect on the ticking. Poweroll makes some high performance rockers that they recommend for their stroker kit. Maybe they'll hold up better?

it could be the cam chain. I would try adjusting it again, which is simple. Also check the valves again. Its also easy to do and you never know exactly what the dealer did. Sometimes they dont have the best or most honest mechanics working there.
