Well it has happend my 250R was pronounced dead at 12:35 P.M. Saturday. I have been trying to revive it since the time of death but it will not come back to life. I have checked the plug and it's dripping with gas and oil, I am getting spark but it will not fire. I would like to get it going soon if not I will have to sell it cause I can't have a dead R. A ounce great machine is now reduce to a lifeless corpse. My question to you is weren't you a little bit weary about a guy that was willing to trade a perfectly good 250X for the ultimate high performance quad straight up? You don't get something for nothing. My advice to you is check if it just needs a new top end. If it does for somewhere around $120 you can have it running just like new!

First, throw your plug away and get a fresh one; gap it to .022 (I don't care what your manual says, gap it to .022). Get a B8ES.
Now, turn off the gas. Hold the throttle wide open and kick it until you're tired. Pull the plug and make sure it's dry. Put it back in. Turn on the gas (I hope your gas is fresh and you have a decent oil mix and not something like a 20:1 ratio). Hold the throttle open and kick it. It should start.
Once running, do a plug check; get it warmed up good, ride it for about 10 minutes. Then hit it wide open for several seconds in like 4th or 5th gear. Then, while still WOT, pull in the clutch and shut it off. When it's cool enough to touch, pull the plug.
Black/oily, go down a size in main jet and try again. You're looking for a light tan/brown. Main jets are not expensive and you should have several of them.

Killer,

My first advice is this...get used to it you will most likely have to wrench on that quad of yours LOTS more than your 250x, I traded my 300ex for my R and its a world of difference, at the sake of gaining all the performance you will ever need, you give up some reliability.

You said you are getting spark, but is it a good spark? I mean does it spark every single kick? If not, check your plug wires, they could be bad. If you are getting good spark, then kick it a few times and pull your plug and smell it, there is a possibility you arent getting gas to it, you said it had gas and oil on it, but is there a chance its tranny oil? I had a leak in my center case gasket and got oil in my top end. If its getting gas and a spark, there is no reason it shouldnt start. Does it have compression? If you have a compression gauge, or can get one, take a compression reading and let us know what you are getting, if there isnt compression you could have a melted down piston or another top end problem.

Ya, the first thing I would check is compression too. It could also be a number of different things like possibly broken reeds or a sheared flyweel key which will throw your timing off.
