Honda TRX250R junk?

Either or really. I have been lucky enough to own 2 basically brand new TRX 250R's. My first was an '88 and my second was an '87 (which I still have). I cut my teeth racing the '88, elevating from stock to modified form. Eventually I graduated to a full on Laeger Pro-Trax Chassis.

I got my roached out 250R for $900. By the time I had $2500 in it I had a quad that would kill ANY stock quad in a drag. Now I have almost $7000 in it and I can lap the Raptors around the local MX track - it isn't even close. Yes, MX is all rider, but after riding one of those Raptors I really feel I am cheating when I race my 250R against all these four stroke farm implements. Maybe if I was a woods rider I would be singing a different tune.
Also, it takes a better rider to take advantage of the brutal power of a modified 250R - an inexperienced rider is better off on something with a mellow power delivery like a Raptor or EX.
I think it is like Chawness said, anyone who doesn't appreciate how incredible a machine the 250R is has never experienced one.
Lastly, any bozo can stroll in and finance his land yacht Raptor - a 250R is like a classic that still has more performance than anything available today with the possible exception of the Cannondale.
By the way, anyone know how many pros are running Raptors yet?

Chawness...Don't get me wrong, I used to race a basically stock R locally and like 250r's as well. However, I do realize that a stock 250r in good shape is a nice machine, but an incredible mind-boggling experience it is not.

Realistically, what you are comparing is a modified quad to a stock one? Woods riding requires the same skills, you would probably like your R as good in the woods too.

Brutal? Was that first $2,500 in engine work? How many horses do you feel your R is making?

With a good credit history, any bozo can stroll in and finance a 250r as well. More performance than anything in STOCK form...please elaborate?

Why is this question specifically aimed towards a Raptor? My posting was by no means incenuating a childish Raptor VS 250r confrontation.

Gary,
Yes, my motor is sort of extreme but it still didn't cost $2500. It is .020 over, fully ported and polished by K&T for mid to top, hogged out CR rad valve, 38 mm A/S taper bored to 39.5 with a power jet installed, Pro design cool head with 19cc dome and a CR headgasket (I run VP C-12 with Klotz), a PT eliminator pipe and no airbox with a Uni filter. I am not sure what kind of power it pushes - my motor builder said he saw 53 HP with a similar setup but who knows.
What I do know is that it will beat any STOCK quad in a drag and still cost about the same as your Raptor (about a grand of the price of mine is in chrome and cosmetics that weren't needed). That 7 grand also includes a set of race wheels and tires and a midrange pipe too.
Didn't mean to offend you - it just sounded to me like you in fact did want a Raptor vs 250R battle. Most guys around here with Raptors only bought them for bragging rights and can't ride them on a track to save their lives. I am sure you are different.

Guys! simmer down! Go re-read the artical. They had a friend that was going to buy the '89 r, and asked the guys at atv sport to have a look see to see if it was worth the money. They found alot of things that only someone that has been intimate with a 250r could find, so they wrote an artical saying what to look for if you go to buy a 250r.

I read that artical in atv Sport too, and not sayin anything bout 250rs (cause most of them keep up or beat my banshee) they do have there amount of problems. My friend has recenlty bought one and found that it was bored 70 over last weekend when a chunck of the cyclinder wall got to hot, came off, and busted everything. He also found out that his frame was cracked too. So ATV sport was probably tryin to get people to buy new quads, but readin that could help lots of people too.

What no one has failed to mention is the fact that the R only weighs 328 pounds!! When you have 70+ pounds not to have to haul around, such as the Raptor has to do, you're going to have a quad that handles a hell of alot better than all others. That to me is why the R is such a killer quad, it jumps great, handles incredible, has great balance, etc., but the it's light weight plays a key role in that. You can do all the mods you want to Raptors, DS650's, on and on and they are still going to be lead sleds compared to the R. I'll take a 16 year old R any day of the week!!
