Going to buy a new quad soon, been considering a 400ex. I ride mostly in the woods, tight woods. No racing or anything, although somtimes it is fun to pick up the pace I currently really like my warrior, thinking of getting a newer warrior (my wife will get the one I have now). If the 400ex had reverse there would be no contest for me, I would get the 400. My main question for you 400ex owners is how bad is it to not have reverse? Also are there any other pros or cons with the 400? Would you recomend it? I was looking at a few 2001's in the classified's, anything I should look for in buying a used one? Anyone have any mechanical problems with it (I have owned lots of other honda products, always had good results)? TIA

After a couple of rides you will get use to it and wonder why they even put reverse on other quads.

for mw not having reverse is not bad at all the 400 is so light it takes very little time to turn it around plus you can just give it gas and whip it around my ex runs great all the time never had 1 problem

Hello, I have hade mine since sept. last year an I love it ,75-100 mile ride is a day ride for us. About once a week we try to ride an I ride in some nasty places in the mountains /the 400 ex is a great trail wheeler /also you can have alot of fun in the sand too,we try to hit the sand too when it's not hot here .The reverse thing well it's not that big of deal to me you get used to not having it ,you learn not to park where you have to back up or you just head the front up a grade then pull the clutch ,let it coast back ,then you are turned around .Then agian if you have room ,just punch it an turn hard /you'll be around an going before another bike gets reverse.
And for the problem's that I have had with this wheeler ? well I haven't had any well that i didn't cause /bent the bars hahah I needed rentals.... wore the tires out I needed itp xct holeshots....and various other upgrades that I just had to have .No really all kidding aside you will not be sorry for gettting a 400ex

I have had my 400ex for a little over a month and absolutely love it. At first it is kind of a pain in the butt not to have reverse. But after about three of four rides it's no big deal. Get you an ex and you won't be sorry. One thing to think about is if you plan on riding two people, the ex is ok but I am sure there are better out there for this.If you get one the first thing I would do is change the handlebars. If your the least bit tall the stock ones hit you in the leg at about 3/4 turn. Just my 2 cents. Hope it helps.

Well it does sound appealing. As for my size I am 6' 245lbs. The 300ex was a bit small, the warrior fits me fine. I dont think my size will be an issue with the 400. I was looking at the Raptor, great quad but I think it is a little more than I need. Not to knock any other brands, they all are good, but it is hard to beat the reliability of a Honda. When I was 15 I bought a new 1985 250sx Three wheeler, I used and abused that thing for many years with no trouble at all (I think I sold it around 1989 or so). Checked into some new ones today, may just go that route. Any other input would be appreciated, thanks.

I also have a 400ex and absolutely love it. I don't think that I would want anything else. Just to give you some info about the 400ex, it is a well-mannered, reliable high performance sport quad. It doesn't even compare at all with the Warrior. Although I honestly have never ridden a Warrior, I have raced against them in every condition. The Warrior is a nice quad, but I just think that it is too heavy. Although the 400ex only has 50 more cc's, the EX has more low-end torgue and is a lot faster. Can the Warrior wheelie without the clutch in any gear? I don't know. But the 400ex can. Handling-wise, the EX is awesome. The suspension is so good, it's unbelivable. It's like a cat, it lands so smooth you can barely feel it. As for the fact that it does not have reverse, to tell you the truth, I was also a little intimidated about that too. I was coming off of a 300ex and upgrading to the 400ex. I have had my 400ex for almost 2 years now and don't miss it at all. It doesn't get stuck. And if it does, it's so light, you just pick it up and turn it around. You need to understand that this is a high performance quad. Has the banshee ever had reverse? no. DS650? no. FX400? no. Raptor? Yeah, but that is what makes it stand out. However, the reverse gear and mechanism does add a lot of weight to the machine. If you decide to purchase a 400ex, I gurantee you that you will not be ashamed. You are buying the machine that was awarded the ATV OF THE CENTURY the year that it was released on the sales floor. Honda took the best frame that they have ever made (the legendary 250r) and put the best motor in that frame that they made(XR400 motor). I have not had any problems with my 400ex. Like I said earlier, I like it a lot. The only thing that I don't like about it is how the grab bar and the sub frame is the same piece. If some idiot runs into you, your sub-frame is bent. I can't figure out why Honda did that. Anyway, if you deside to buy this machine you are buying the best. I will garantee that if you buy this machine you will never want to ride your Warrior again. That happened to me with my 300ex. As much as I liked my 300ex, I never thought that I would never even consider not riding it again. Well it happened. The power increase doesn't even compare.

Have you ridden a 400?? It is better than a Warrior in EVERY WAY!! (I rode a Warrior for years by the way.) The 400 is a near perfect trail bike!
