One is "supposed" to be for speed and the other for power. I dont even bother to look what I'm in since I have never been able to tell the difference.

My rubicon has a dramitic difference between the two. D2 is for torque as it keeps the engine around 2,000RPM and D1 is for sport as it lets the engine rev up to 5,000RPM much easyer.
Note, when floored both ranges "Know" you want speed and power and they will act alike, and both ranges rev out top speed the same..

Baldheadedgeek. I too know of no one that has ever had a problem with a Hondamatic transmission. I have owned Hondamatics for 20+ years and have never experienced a problem.

The only person who has had a problem with his Rubicon is "Rubiconland" and his web page is www.rubiconland.com and the post is the 3rd and 4th page of my long post titled "letter to honda" here is a link to Rubiconland's tranny noise.

First off try to get the whole story out of him....its quite fishy. His problem was with the gears in the subtranny. NOTHING to do with the Hondamatic. He also has larger tires with a HOMEMADE and jumps his quad.

The difference in D1 and D2 is huge in the way the rpm's turn for any given speed. In D2 the transmission runs in a higher gear range(lower rpm's). Texmud, you can't tell a difference in your selection of D1 and D2? In mine its like a night and day difference in the way it performs and I think it makes the Rubicon tranmission perfect for any given task. I will say the owners manual does not explain the way it works very well but after you learn how it works from riding it you will be very impressed. So far no other transmission comes close to the quality of the Rubicon. Also in ESP the high speed(30 mph and above)performance is much better than in D1 or D2.

I can tell no difference in D1 and D2. The engine rpm is identical. I asked the local Honda dealer has sold over 50 units, and he said they had never been able to tell a difference in any of them.
