250R vs 400EX - - Age Old Question Once More
#1
Hey everyone, I know RedReconRider has a post similar to this one, but I really need some help. I love my Banshee, and it's a GREAT mx quad, but too much needs to be done to it.. and I dont have the money. It's in good shape, but all the little stuff is eating me up! So, my question is:
Which quad would be better for 75% MX, 20% Trails, and 5% whatever's left? It has been a dream of mine to get an R, and unfortunately I couldn't find one when I bought my Shee. The more time I spend on a 4-stroke, the more I like them. I had an 01 300EX here for a week to play on.. I really like the sound, but I still want to smell the Klotz SuperTechniplate coming out of the pipe.
Also, I know this may sound like a dumb question.. But which one would be cheaper to mod? I know 2-stroke engines require more maintenece, but would the cost of the maintenence and mods be more than 4strokes? Once I think about it, the good 4-stroke pipes are around $500, and 2 strokes are $300... You can get a new topend done for $200...
This is the real hang up though.. I have found a 2000 400EX for $3750, and a 1986 TRX250R for $3750. Now is that tough or what?
One more thing, what mods would need to be done to both to make them competitive in amateur racing? Keep in mind that I USED to ride a stock Banshee(until a month ago).
Which quad would be better piped.... Then widened... Well, you get the picture..
Thanks,

That looks like a nice R for $4000. It obviosly already has some mods. I can see the pipe, bumper, nerfs, wheels/tires and of course the graphics kit. Plus if he races it it no doubt has some motor mods as well. Can't see the width or shocks in the picture. In stock form the 88's and 89's may be a little better but once their modded the 86-89's are all the same, it doesn't matter. I would imagine the 400EX for $3,750 is mostly stock, in which case this particular R will blow it away in every aspect. Hey, the more I look I think I see a remote shock resivor, which makes this an even better buy. Go for it.

I just got off the phone with him.. He says there is nothing wrong with it, and that he's just getting out of the sport. He's getting married next year, and he's saving up to buy a Mustang Cobra.
He said that he just put a brand new FMF Fatty and PowerCore on it, and he rebuilt the engine from the lower crank bearings up before this race season. It has an LSR +4 axle on it, Ohlins shocks on the front, chromed side cases, chromed swingarm, DG front bumper, AC nerfs, Pro Taper bars, I think the plastic is just black Maier, or full bore, with a carbon fiber hood on the front... I think that's about it.

Ohlins kicka#$ i run them on my warrior! My warrior handles better than a stock r with these shocks (i also have a tcs rear though) I know i will catch hell for that comment, the fact is i have rode many 250r's a stock one doesnt hold a candle to my frt end. A modded one is like riding cadillac through the woods. Especially with pep zps shocks i only rode one bike with those shocks and those are definetly better than ohlins not by far though.
