I want to buy a 400ex. A guy told me he had a 99 400 and it needed a new piston, rings, and crank and that he wanted $2800 as is. I want to know if thats a good deal and i want to know how much a piston, rings, and crank costs for a 400ex.
Thanks,
bigdogjordan

To get a shop to replace all that you are looking at around 500$ LABOR.....I am assuming crank needs new connecting rod and bearing 75$, piston and rings 110$, complete gasket kit around 100$.......expect to spend around 900$ to make this thing completely and correctly repaired.....so that =3700$ for a 99 model.....thats alittle steep....maybe give him 2500$ for it.....

Those are some pretty serious engine problems. If he's willing to tell you about those, what problems isn't he telling you about.

I agree with Killer and Duney, I wouldn't buy it dude. If I was you, I would give him a "Thanks for your time", and walk away and never look back!

if its for the whole fourwheeler, I'd offer a little less sell the motor and buy a bad @ss motor to put on it!

Have you seen the body/chassis? If all he did was run it out of oil, you may have a chance. I dropped in my 440 wiht cam and all for about 500, labor myself. Done at home in my garage in about 2 days. I have also done a rebuild on a burnt motor( a friends) and believe the attention and quality of the motor is excellent, and to bore it out, go 326, possibly cam it, and have the bottom end gone through shouldnt be too bad. Itll run you about 500, depending on the cam and such. If the bike doesnt show to much roughhousing, maybe he ran it out of oil and it has been setting, thats what my buddy did. Its your money, good luck.
