I just bought a stock 86 TRX 250R pipe and silencer and replaced the fmf pipe and fmf power core II silencer on my bike. Is it me or is this thing just too loud. I don't think the HP gain is worth it. I haven't ran the bike yet with the stock system but what should I expect, big power losss, more torque? The FMF system seems to have no bottom end at all. Also, could the stock pipe be used in conjuction with an aftermarket exhaust and yeild any gains. FYI, I have a 38 air styker, some port work, a K&N filter and boyseen reeds.

It will be quieter, but the power loss will be noticable. If you had no bottom end power, you may see an increase there. There are quieter silencers and pipes. My wife's R has the FMF Fatty (and great bottom end power) with the FMF Power Core silencer and it's not very loud at all.
And yeah, you must be getting old!

But you're not as old as I am!

LRD makes a quiet silencer, they have it on their website. I have one on a 350pv engine and it's barely louder than stock but the motor still makes great power.

So could the LRD silencer be used with any pipe, also how good is the FMF pipe, is it worth keeping.

If your seriously interested I recommend you call LRD, they have a well informed group of people. I can't say for certain that it would fit every pipe, it would depend mainly on the diameter of the stinger of the pipe. The FMF pipe is a decent choice depending on what your needs are. Have you checked compression? If it's low you will have poor low end power. This motor may be set up for high end power. The higher the compression (to a point)the stronger the low end power.

Trx250Rob, I'm sure its not the problem... But have you repacked the silencer? A pipe will be terribly loud w/o any stuffing in there!

I put new packing in it and it is still way too loud. This is coming from a guy that used to like to run straight pipes. I had one bike so loud it would make me throw up.

I would dump the FMF. I have one too and i hate it. It has 0 bottom end, is loud as hell, and the stupid *** nickel finish came off within two weeks (using fmf pipe cleaner, and mothers polish ) I am getting ESR to build my motor this winter and am gonna get the TRX 5 Center mount pipe. I would give ESR a call for the headpipe, and LRD For the quiet silencer. You may be better off going all LRD though. I just know i love ESR Pipes.
