250R top end sputtering?!?!

i run a 170 main with a ported 250 cylinder with all the bolt on goodies one bore over stock arounf sea level. sounds like you should be the one with the 190 main. hehe
also i run a 38mm Air Stryker ESR air box eliminator, pipe, reeds and its 248cc's mild porting.

bchitwood73- when you were running it did you look at the plug any>? Was it white, and did it seem to "flatin" out when you tryed to rev it? If so then yes it was probably lean. Now, every motor is diffrent. For example my 88 250R (stock cylinder) needs a 160 main, and my 86 needs a 135. Both have same mods..... So, I would start at 180 this time and go down from there.

I want to say that the plug did look a little ashy when I pulled it out. I have a CR 250 that came stock with this exact same carb with a 180 main and a 50 pilot that I am going to try out, I got the cylinder back last night from being bored out. When the motor failed on me last summer it was still the stock bore with I think is like 246cc or something like that, Now its a 165 with some very mild porting and also the deck has been filed to bump up the compression a little. I think the 180/50 might be a good baseline to start with. Where do you guys get your jets, I think the best place I have found so far has been sudco for I want to say around $4 a pop?
Thanks

Yes the 86's main way either a 145 or 148. There is no way he can hit the rev limiter on a stock electrical system because its a resistor type system, BUT its not common to sputter in 6th gear because usually your motor cant rev out to as much, and it isnt common to hit the rev limiter in 6th because a stock bike cant hit 9500 RPM..... So, I would check your plug and make sure it isnt black, and if it isnt then check your eletrical system for loose connections and such.

Ok everyone thanks for the help with my 250R. I got it all put back together tonight and its ready to be broke in now. However I do have one last kinda stupid question. When I got the jug back from my porting guy (Eric Gorr) it came with a cosmetic top end gasket kit. The kit included a gasket for the head cap, however some of the water jacket ports on this gasket are still on the gasket. Out of I think 8 or so water ports, 3 of them are now being blocked by the new gasket. Am I missing something here or is this the way it should be? There is also a little tap that sticks out the side in between the cap and the jug. Where should this tab be pointing?
Thank you,
Brad

I had the same question when I rebuilt my 85 R. It was on the original bore when I bought it and it made it another 12 or so tanks and the piston skirt let go. Anyway, when I went to put the cylinder head back on, I notice the same thing. It seemed like some of the cooling passages were being blocked by the gasket. However, I still had the old gasket and it matched up perfectly. I am still using it without issue.
Can anyone else confirm? I had thought about cutting out the gasket to remove the restriction, but then thought that maybe the restriction is there on purpose to increase the pressure enough to push the coolant up throught the cylinder and radiators.

YES, thats exactally the same problem I am having. Does anyone know if these cooling ports should or should not be blocked off? Also the little tab that sticks out the side of the gasket where should this be pointing?
Thanks,
