i said NATURAL rev limit. reading is your friend.
LOL, what do you mean by NATURAL rev limiter? stock?

Like HA2 said the tab of the gasket (the rounded one, not the squared one) should be pointing forward. Yes, there should be a couple spots where the gasket blocks off the coolant. I honestly dont know why, but all gaskets are like that.

natural, meaning it doesnt have the ***** to pull anymore. i didnt even know the R had a limited range of 9500 rpm's. ever driving a air cooled VW, you know what natural rev limit means in a hurry.

The ports should be blocked off by the gasket on the inlet side (the gasket should have round holes here) and ovals on the exhaust side (it runs hotter than the intake). I would recommend getting a honda head gasket. They are tin and are much better then Cometic.

190 sounds massive. I have (2) 250R's. One is fairly modified and is running a 185, the other a 170. If you've got lots of jets, just work down slowly from 190 until you find what works.

I would guess you will find a 162 to 168 is the best fit for your machine.

I have an 86 punched out to a 265cc and a full FMF exhaust, 39mm Keihin and a Boysen reed cage. Fryed the top end last summer and am just now getting it back together, I was running a 172main with a 42 pilot on the middle clip does this seem lean to anyone else considering the 39mm carb? I am at sea level and run Bel-Ray MC-1 50:1 with no lid and a K&N with outerwears?

Thanks,
Brad
42 pilot jet is waaaay to small, I know the 38mm airstrykers come standard with a 42 pilot, learned that the hard way when my motor seized, I'm running a 50 now with a 200 main jet. Motor is an ESR 310 PV with CR250 ignition and ESR pipe with K&N and no airbox lid at 750 feet above sea level, runs awesome!!

Does the pilot jet really matter? If your engine requires "x" amount of fuel at full throttle and the pilot jet supplies "y" amount, then the main jet needs to supply the difference "x - y".

I don't understand how a pilot jet could cause a seizure, providing that the proper jetting was done with the main jet and checked.

Please elaborate.

Correct me if I am wrong but the pilot controls the mix from the 1/4th to 3/4th throttle position and the main controls from 3/4th to full? I can't imagine that you would need to simply set your main correctly and call it a day. From my experience, when it comes to jetting your machine will not run correctly unless all 3 carb circuits are dead on, problem is most people don't realize the jetting is off until their machine fails, or they simply don't know how it should run in the first place.

I got my exhaust flange in the mail last night and fired the bike up for about 10 minutes for a break-in and that 180 main, with the 50 pilot gave my plug a nice dark tanish looking color. Maybe a bit too rich but I won't know for sure until I can open the throttle up all the way. As far as the lame gasket goes, your right, the water jacket passages that are blocked do have a small hole in them for some water to pass however I want to say that these were on the exhaust side, not the intake. Does that make sense?

Thanks for all the input guys,
Brad

The pilot jet is just as critical as the main in my opinion. My seize happened when I was just putting around, probably around 1/4 throttle!

this is when a lot of melt downs happen.
