Where can I buy a 250r engine? (Project quad)
#1
I want to start a project quad where I need the bottom end of a 250r motor; does anyone know where I can get one? I heard that Honda still sells the bottom end, if that's the case how do you contact Honda about buying one?
I would not mind having to buying the whole engine just for the bottom end. Also if anyone has any good alternatives to getting a good engine for a project quad, let me know.
The main reason I want a 250r-based engine over a motorcycle engine is because of the counter balancer and the sixth gear.
Thanks for any help / advise you can offer.

Service Honda offers a kit engine for around 2,800.00. When you order this engine you get all the parts you need and you must assemble it. I know a shop that had 2 85 or 86 250r engines that where taken off brand new threewheelers and never run.He wanted 2,400.00 for those engines.

I checked into this a little bit last spring.
I called Service Honda, they said the "250R" engine is a CR250 engine "kit". I didn't get anymore details because that statement turned me off, plus, the guy just "sounded" kinda dumb.
I turned to my local Honda dealer. They called someone at Honda, who referred him to someone who supposedly had access to new 250R motors. My parts guy could never get through to this person, so he gave me the number to try myself. I could never get through either. Eventually, I lost interest, and saved my money for a new Banshee.
I might try again this winter, but most likely, I will just rebuild the motor I have instead of trying to buy a new one. A brand new one would sure be nice though!

Alot of guys don't know it but there are hundreds of 250R engines BRAND NEW sitting around. The worst thing is that the people that know EXACTLY where they are don't know WHAT they are. These engines that I'm talking about are actually from 1986 ATC250R three wheelers. {There are also hundreds of 350X engines around}. When Honda and the other manufactures agreed to stop selling three wheelers with 1987 being the last model year allowed with three wheelers, Honda didn't carry over the 250R and 350X{They did carry over the 200X}. ALL of the unsold 250R's and 350x's were disassembled and were donated to High School's with Vocational centers, Colleges, and the Motorcycle Mechanics Institute. They received Tire/Wheel assemblies and Engine assemblies [even still had the front sprocket and sparkplug]. The frames were then cut in half and put in dumptrucks leaving the Honda warehouse headed to the scrap heap. I know all this because I purchased [2]250R engines and [2]350x engines about 4 years ago for only $500.00!!! Supposedly, Honda had the school districts sign a paper stating that engines were to be destroyed when no longer needed, but did not want them back. The teacher that I received these engines from said that he worked for the school when they received the engines. They had to go to the Honda warehouse in Shreveport, LA to pick them up. He said there were hundreds of units there and they disassembled them while they were there. So, try making some contacts with some the High Schools in your state. I got mine from the Agriculture class. {crazy}. You might walk up on the deal of a lifetime. p.s. Before you ask I have sold all them except one 250R engine and it's not for sale. sorry.
