416EX Performance Review

I have the same setup (11:1 416, HRC [xr] Cam, High flow filter), only I don't have the e-series pipe. Right now I'm running a 152 main, stock pilot, and the needle richend one nothch. For alittle extra gain with no cost, trim the flange on the end of the snorkle, and take off your stock headpipe and grind down the "lips" you will find on the inside of the header. Also, consider getting some porting done. It made a world of difference on my 416. Gt Thunder did an excellent job on my porting, but considering that their building burnt down, and you live in Arizona, about any good motor builder will do porting for you.
PS. When you Order your cam, be sure to get new valve springs with it.

If you want to really wake your 416 up get the HRC cam. It cost alot more than most cams but you don't to do any other work to use it. It was made by Honda for the xr 400 motor and is a drop in racing cam that gives you power everywere. What i like about is how hard it pulls when the power comes on. It is well worth the money.($277 at Service Honda)

I think it would be the better cam for dunes. I have not ridden a quad with the XR cam but id o no the HRC is the upgrade from the XR cam so i would think it have to be a better cam for performace. I have the same setup as you execpt i have mild head porting form Gt Thunder but i also have the WB slip on, K&N filter and jet kit and i JE 10-8-1 piston with the HRC cam. Without the motor work i would loose to a stock Raptor by about 4-7 quad links(depends on how long race was)and he would pull me on top real bad now with the cam and piston i run right beside the Raptor and depending on the start i can beat him. So please don't make your mind up on a 416 intill you get the other parts that all work together to wake you 400ex up.

The piston without the cam will not give you much power, 5 of my friends have EX's in varios stages of modification, One friend has a basically stock EX with a pipe and jets, he can take another friends with a 430 11.5:1 piston and exhaust. The fastest of them all is a 416 with a big XR cam, the cam makes all the diference, to make HP an engine has to breathe. The 416 can beat two other 430's with medium cams. ITS LIKE PORTING A 2 STROKE

I've ridden both 400's with the HRC (what mine has), and the stock Xr400 cam, and I can tell quite a bit of difference. The stock xr has more power down low, with a more mellow mid and top, and the HRC has more mellow bottom end, then a good midrance hit with a decent top end.
Kinda like this:
..........................Bottom | Midrange | Top.....
Stock 400ex..... Stongest | Decent | Weak
HRC............. Weakest | Strongest| Decent
XR400........... Decent | Decent | somewhat strong
Whoa...spent too much time on that
