I have to agree with what has been said so far about asking permission before you ride. This truely is what gets land closed down to ATV's. I too have property (or at least my parents do) and they don't care if I ride around or do whatever I want. But when it comes to other people they don't want them down there because what happens if they get hurt? THEY CAN SUE! And the sad thing is that people now a day's are so sue happy somtimes they deliberatly hurt themselves to get money, or they can't take responsiblity for their own stupidity (look at McDonalds, come on coffee is supposed to be hot)! Some guy also sued Honda because his little TRX200 couldn't accelerate a truck that he just so happened to pull out in front of. People just want money and will do just about anything to get it. Sometimes landowners are cool about letting you ride on their property, but others want you to stay off, and for good reason. They have somthing to lose if YOU get hurt. It kinda sucks I know but there is nothing you can do about it other than make sure it is ok to ride where ever it is you ride.

<< And Gergb, I was kinda offended by the way you posted your post. >>

jeffman,
I only posted my opinion and I stand by every word. I AM sorry to see that you are choosing to do as you damn well please(going to ride there anyway), and to heck with everyone else. Just because someone else does it does not make it right or legal.

Gergb,
Thats very well true. BUT, I went over there yesterday and I stopped these guys on thier 4-wheeler (the ones that ride those powerlines and has trails all over them) and asked them if it was alright if I put up a gate and ride over there and they said that it was fine that their neighbors is the one that owns the land and he dont care who rides there. Sooooo, if I can get a gate up, thats what i'll do.

In other words, I got permission first!!!

Jeffman,
You better re-read your post. According to what you wrote, you got permission from some guys on quads, who told you that the real owner of the property in question would not mind if you gated it? I think you better ask the owner of the property in person...

Yes, don't trust the word of someone else as far as whether or not it's ok to ride on someone elses land. I had a guy offer to show me some new trails on some land adjoining the property I was riding on. I asked him if he was sure it was ok to ride there and he said sure, the guy that owned the land didn't care who rode there.
A week later that very same guy was busted for trespassing. I talked to a local cop about the trespassing laws in my area and he said it varies on a local level. Some communities call for a warning the 1st time while others do not. He said around here if the land owner files a complaint it is a $500 fine.
I have since decided to treat my atv riding as I do my hunting, I only hunt & ride where I have personally received permission. I think the advice to personally ask the landowner is the best way to go.

Jeffman,

As hard as it is for me to say this...(cuz I can't stand the guy)knowsalot is right. Just stay away from crap like that. I use to ride on powerlines, gaslines and on logging roads. You really just give us quadriders a bad name if you don't ask for permission before riding anywhere. Don't wait til someone tells you not to ride there, show them the respect and ask first. Your actions will remain in peoples minds when they go to a township meeting with the local atv club that is trying to get township roads opened up or more riding areas for us. It's a sad,sad world we live in, but you have to learn to "play the game." Act right, and people will start to come around.
We have some support now with local atv clubs and now the ATVA. If you are not a member of your local atv club, I strongly recommend you join. And everyone else that is reading this post. Then you can go to every landowner along the powerline as a group, and ask for permission to ride there. Share the wealth in other words. So it'll keep someone else from riding where they are not allowed. Then everyone is happy.
Yeah, this is not the easiest way to handle this. But, this is a different world now, and you have to deal with situations differently. It's not like when our dad's use to tear up whatever they wanted to and whenever they wanted to. With the current legislation, we need to be a "smarter ATV'er"

PhilMoore, you said I should ask the owner if I should gate it??? No, the owner of the other land has no say so on if I or my grandpa can put a gate up there. Thats my grandpas fence and he could tear it down if he wants to. Its his, not the other land owners. Anyways, you guys are right. But I cant ride over there yet anyway b/c its deer hunting season and my grandpa makes us quit riding b/c he's scared we will scare the deer. But I still have another like 50 or 60 acres to ride on, (thank god). But it will be like Feb. b 4 I could ride over there anyway. AND, they also told me where the land owner lived and I will get in my CAR, (not on my quad), and talk to him one day and see if he cares. Happy? Geeze...

jcv400ex, I'm not trying to start anything here, but I want to ask you, just in what way have I done something for you to say that you can't stand me? Not that I really care on a personnal level, but some of you guys have said nothing BUT negative things to say about me.

TO OTHERS OUT THERE

In MY defense, I have to say that while I haven't been on this board very long, I read EVERY post on here EVERY night, and can tell you that NONE of you guys that rag on me do little if anything at all to help anyone on here in anyway. Those of you that complain about me seem to be only that.

I get numerous private messages every evening from members thanking me for helping them with questions that others made fun of didn't have the knowledge to answer.

Happy trails to the guys who actually care about the sport and to give the sport in general a positive image.

Dude, brush it off, ignore it, what-ever. Just stick around. Too many people have left here because they let the crap get to them. Personally, I think some of it is funny, when I am in the mood for it. If I ain't in the mood, I don't read it. Anyway, the good stuff usually floats to the top, and I just skim it off. I figure the other flotsam is just for entertainment.
No matter what your personal opinion on the topic of this discussion, posting that opinion gets people thinking. Keep in mind that ninety nine percent of the posts on here are opinions, not backed up by facts. This is probably because it is too much work! Essentially, we do not need absolute fact for much of what is discussed here. If you take the time to make a post about something you KNOW about, it will be well recieved by many of the readers. Even though they may not comment

Imagine this forum as a nice beach. You build an awesome sand castle, it takes much time. Then some punk comes along when you aren't looking and kicks it into the surf. The only difference here is your words can exist in more than just memory, we've got a nice search engine to look them up when we need to. Only you, (or a moderator) can take them away!

Knowsalot,

Well one thing is your name. How vain are we!? And I HATE (what), HATE(what), HATE when someone starts saying how they have info that they can't share. ERR! I can't stand that! If you are not going to share, then don't even hint at it, cuz we don't care that you "knowalot" and aren't going to share it!
And how you know a guy that drove the DRZ and they had 400ex's there and Raptors there....blah, blah, blah. Remember the first report on the Raptor in Dirt Wheels? How Yamaha reps tested it along side the DS, Banshee, and the 400ex? Well, they claimed that it had SO much more power than all three, handled better than the 400ex, and was faster than the DS. Well, that turned out to be a guy that had a boner over the fact that HE was one of the first to ride a new Raptor!

So really I guess I take back my earlier comment, I guess I can't say that I can't stand you. Cuz I really don't know you, but I don't like how you protray yourself online. I'm sure you do know alot about quads and what have you, and I'm glad to see that you can offer some constructive advise to people. And if I had the chance to ride with you I would. This is just people expressing there views on here, but in the real world we learn we atleast have one thing in common, we both have passion for the sport.

But in the end of you message you start you crap agian. How you are bragging, well we have enough of those type of people in here. And if I'm in such a minority, how come I see alot of people....pretty much telling you where to go? Here's your line:

"Yeah, you are right, I AM bragging! Because it is to make a point. If you don't like me because of my views on certain topics then I would have to say that you are in a VERY, VERY small minority. Sooooooooo, that would make YOU the guy who isn't liked.

Well, I think I'm done now. See ya on the trails ;-)
