i'm gonna be selling my tb and one of the USED quads i'm looking at for $2000 or less is the 250x and i have a couple of questions.
first off i've never seen a 1990 250x. did they make them that year? secondly is $2000 a good price for a 87 or newer? how is their reliability? is it faster then a 300ex? and lastly do you think it would be worth putting mods into it if i want to race it or make it faster for the trails? thanks in advance. p.s. one of my other used options is a 300ex if it's $2000 or under.

There isn't any way you should be buying any year 250x for $2000. Heck I'll sell you my 95 300ex for $2300. The 250x are super reliable and are about the same speed as a 300ex since a higher compression piston. Yes they're worth putting mods into. In my opinion they're about the best trailquads. Put on a K&N Filter and a white bros muffler and it'll make a big defference. I have a K&N and a cheap cobra muffler system on mine plus a larger countershaft sprocket for more top end speed and I can ride a wheelie in all gears including 5th but its pretty hard.

The 250X was made in '87 to '88 and then '91 to '92. They didn't make them in '89 or '90.
The 250X is right up there with the 300EX as far as speed but handles better because it is much lighter. It all depends on whether you prefer to kick or push a button to get it started.
The '87 and '88 models had a problem with 3rd gear. Honda had a fix for it and most of them were done. if you look into buying one of these models, be sure that there is a die stamp on the engine case beside the engine serial number. That would let you know FOR SURE if it was updated with the 3rd gear upgrade. Some owners chose to install this themselves after Honda's deadline for FREE installation expired, so you might want to look into the history with prior owners. It's about a $500.00 fix with labor.

If you come across a 87 250x and plan to buy it make shure it has the updated gear. If the seller doesnt know either stay away from it or give bottom dollar (no where near $2,000). I bought one and assumed since it was as old as it was and still shifting smooth that it had already been fixed. After about 3 months it went out. I got it fixed and used the spare engines gear that came with the quad and it went about 3 weeks later. I didnt have the money to fix it again and had to sell it for about the amount of money I had in the brand new white bros. pipe and lectron carb I had put on it. I was so mad I almost would have given it away. The x's and ex's are good quads, just make shure you know what your getting. $2,000 in my opinion is kind of steep for any x unless it has alot of $'s in it. They can be made fast but it will take alot to hang with a 400ex and Ive seen them sell for not much more than $2,000.

I just bought an 88 250x and it is tough to find one for under $2000. I found one for $1500 through a friend of a friend. It is all pretty much stock and has new 300x plastic. Any 250x with all the mods (exhaust, nerfs, jetting, etc.) is probably going to cost between $2000. and $2500. It seems crazy for a quad that old but they have the reputation for being one of the most reliable ever made (knock on wood). good luck in your search...

If I remember right I sold mine for about $400.00. a few years ago. I was without a job and behind on a few bills, so I just wanted some quick cash. I was already planning on a new quad for the next year. My 87 had a strong Curtis Sparks national kit, I had just threw the old and completely rusted out sparks pipe away and put on a W/B ProMeg E series. Also a Lecton carb. these two items were only about 2 months old. It had a good frame, o.k. plastic, good seat, a 1 month old Graydon bumper, o.k. front shredders on good rims, o.k. turf tamers on good rims, old Graydon nerfs, and old Sidewinder chain a sprockets. Also it had a very badly messed up trans. I had just gotten it fixed a few weeks before and used old trans parts from the extra engine I got with the quad. I was going to try to get about $1,000 or $1,200 out of it. I took it for a ride to make shure everything was working good and on my way back home about 2 miles from my house I shifted gears and herd an awfull noise and then the quad stalled because the rear wheels locked up. I was VERY MAD and told my self I wasn't walking. I started it back up and took off. This thing was making noises that I wouldn't have dreamed possible. There was so much strain on the engine trying to pull the quad that it was about to blow. Anyway I originaly bought it for $1,200 with all mods except the pipe, carb, bumper and rear tires/rims. It came with a complete extra engine,an extra set of sand tires and wheels and a helment and goggles.
