I have a 86 TRX 250R that, in my opinion is a quick quad. I have an FMF pipe and Silencer, stock bore, cool head, a jet kit, its polished and ported, and thats about it. My friends Banshee seems like it is always ahead of me and I know there is a 100cc difference but I have heard and seen videos of extremely fast 250R's. I don't know if it is me or my bike, or are banshees just generally faster than 250R's? He doesn't even have that much on his shee except for pipes K&N filters, bigger carbs (39mm's I think). Any ideas or tricks for my 250r? Thanks

If you drag race or ride in dunes or open spaces I would suggest a 38 or 39mm carb. I also like to bore it out to at least a 265cc (.080 over) and correct the porting for the overbore. A good tuned banshee with pipes and filters will beat most 250r's in a drag. If the banshee has good port work you probably won't win with a 250r.

in a straight line the Banshee wins

on the trail or on the track or in the woods the 250r wins

A Shee will have ya beat in the dunes or drags, anywhere else is your terrain! DONT bore your 250 just to make it a 265!!! That makes it much less reliable! Anything over .60 is getting unreliable. Mine is at .05 over. Get your R a CR250 rad valve (a certain year, ask ESR) and a 38mm A/S carb. You should have a much faster R! And if that isnt enough call LRD And get a 295cc big bore sleeve!

Depends on lots of things.
I have a friend that ported his stock 250 cylinder and he eats Banshees in drag races. Now, he is just racing the guys with pipes and reed mods, not some of those crazy 500cc guys.
Mostly, with just bolt-on mods, in the dunes or in a drag race the Banshee is going to whomp the R.
MX racing, woods racing, etc, the R will come out ahead.
Wanna get real crazy? Got a friend has this Polonda, 411cc, funny smelling fuel, . . . . .

The 250R is a nice fast machine but it will never keep up with an equally built Banshee. The Banshee has 100cc on you. You have a light good handling machine, if you want to win drags get a Banshee.

You can certainly build you 250R to beat your friend but if he does the same thing to the Banshee he will be beating you again.
