Honda 200X Questions Please Help!!
#1
I am looking at buying a 200x atc. What are the differences between the pre 86 models and the 86 and 87 models, some people have told me that one is a 6 speed and one is a 5. Others have told me the later models have more power and a 4 valve head. They are all manual clutch though, right? Is this as bulletproof as most old Hondas (my 82 atc 200 and 87 trx250 utility) ? Any help would be appreciated.

The 86/87 200x were much better, they have 6 speed instead of 5, more engine hp (might be higher comp piston?) they have some differences on the swingarm and axle, (its hard to find an 86 200x axle) they were white and blue, (they looked real good!) both are manual clutch. I have seen a lot of pre 85 200x's, they are everywhere. If you can find the newer one definatly go with that, I may be a collectors item someday, never know. reliability is good, excpt mine sits with a locked up engine. I let a friend use it and the oil never got checked for a while. they will run strong (as long as you keep oil in it!) I have a new 86 engine on the way from ebay right now. I believe that this is the eaisest bike to wheelie and keep balanced. thats all

If you want to bore out your 200X, james200X, you are just asking for trouble. The ATC200X engine (which is almost identical to the XR200 engine) loses reliability exponentially once modifications are done to the engine. Sure, a mid-range cam or little bit higher compression piston won't hurt, but anything serious and then you have a time bomb on your hands. Keep the 200X engine stock, the little trikes are good trail machines but not much more.
FAST453EX- there are a bunch of differences between the '83-'85 and '86-'87 200X trikes. Besides the 5 vs 6 speed gearbox, the '86-on machines have a different swing-arm, shock, bearing carrier, axle, frame, and forks. Basically, the '86-on machines have new rolling chassis with almost the same engine. Oh yeah, different plastic and seat, too. The '86-'87 200X trikes handle a little bit better than the older models, but they still have that same 200X feel that every trike rider loves.
