Locking front diff on 300 4x4
#3
If your friend is going to be doing allmost nothing but mud bogs, the locker kit will be great. However, for everyday trail riding,it's a very poor choice as it will steer VERY hard and you will get exausted quickly. The Polaris AWD system gives you your choice of 2wd or real 4wd when activated. The KQ,which is only 280cc also offers you a Differential Lock that will mechanically lock together all 4 wheels.I have owned both quads, and while Im having numerous problems with the Sportsman,it does seem to be an isolated problem. After riding the big 500cc Sportsman, the 280CC KQ seems very underpowerd to me.But,I know alot of happy KQ owners. Not everybody needs that big 500cc. Hey fellas, hunting season has begun so I have been a little short on time here lately. I have to disagree with Bill. The required steering effort is increased when a locker is added, but it is by no means "VERY hard".
I have a four year old who rides my 300 (which is locked) and never complains about the steering. As a matter of fact, he complains that his thumb gives out befor his arms are tired. And by the way, he is getting a 50cc quad for Christmas.
There are a couple of 'tricks' to riding with the locker that you pick up quickly. Also the type of tires that you have will play a major role as to the "hardness" of the steering as will a lift kit.

Shane, you have posted that statement about the locker before, and your the only one in here that I've EVER seen say that about a locker.I rode a Foreman before with a locker, and I sure as heck would'nt concider it for trail riding. But if thats your opionion,I respect it.BTW,do they call your son BAM-BAM [LOL] good day BILL

Hey Bill,
What I hear quite a bit is that the 300 with a locker is MUCH easier to steer than the heavier Foremans. I've heard that from several folks.... But, it is "hearsay"
Y'all have a good un'

Bill,
Now that I think about it, I am just about the only person that has spoken about having a locker. Therefore, there can be very little to contridict my OPINION ( everyone has one ).
The foreman does steer harder than the 300, I've ridden both. The Girzzly steers more difficult than either of the above mentioned quads. The Big bear steers a great deal easier than ANY of the above mentioned bikes. (Also, I've ridden each)
Now your idea of trail riding is probably quite different than mine. I consider trail riding as looking for the next mud hole, I very rarely get out of third gear.
Oh yeah, Noooooo [ ;^) ] my son's name is not BAM-BAM, but he is about three and a half feet tall. :^)

Bill,
It sounds like you need to hit the weight room!!! I have riden a 300 with the locked differential, and it was not much harder to steer than mineis without the locker. I soon plan to buy the locker and high perf. kit. Shane and steve How did the high perf kit help your 300? Can you spin the vampires a gear higher than stock? I dont want to waste money on only a smalll amount of power increase but if it is a noticeably better then I will buy it let me know soon please!!!

Hey Matt,
I think what Bill experienced was a locker on a heavier, longer wheelbase quad. I do think it would take a bit more to steer a locked Foreman.
The power kit helped me more in the "mid-range". It did nothing for me on off-idle power. I think you might want to consider the 313 kit.
There is NO SUCH THING as spinning Vamps in the next highest gear unless it is on a 500cc quad
But mine are 26x12 and 25x9.
Keep us posted.

Steve,
How much does the 313 kit cost? Installation fees? What about highlifters new piston and cam package? It claims it turns the 400 into a 450 will it tunr a 300 into a 350? Even then is that small difference worth the money?
