400EX burns entire tank of oil in 4 hours..... HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
#11
Because I just recently bought it, and I love riding!!!
The bike runs great, and I would never have known something wasnt right if I didnt check
the oil so often. Dosnt smoke or anything. I am going to rebuild the top end with the Powroll 415 Kit. (A trip to glamis is in the works while the kit is on order..)

The title of your post says it burns entire tank in 4 hours, and in your first post you said after a 4 hour ride it was dry, but then later you say...
<< After a 4 hour ride today, oil dipstick is showing maybe 1/4 inch of oil on the stick. >>
If there is 1/4" of oil on the dipstick it is not dry. There is plenty of oil in the tank if it is reading on the dipstick.
Not trying to start anything OK. Just trying to find out which it is so we can be helpful. I also think if it burned the entire tank in 4 hours you would definitely see a lot more smoke than you describe, and with no oil it should be very hot as well. And if it is using that much oil, don't ride it or you may end up replacing a lot more than just rings!!

your oil plug is on tight isn't it.
your motor isn't bust or cracked any where is ??????
if it is none of these your bike must have no rings in it at all. if you are still under warrenty i would take it in as soon as possible if i could.
if not i would be tearin it down and goin through every inch of the motor

Mine was burning just as much oil as his is before my rebuild, and it didn't have all that much smoke (just some blue smoke before it warmed up, and a tiny puff of black if you reved it from idle to redline. Mine would go from a full dipstick to maybe 1/2 inch left on it in a day's ride (6-7 hours of hard MX riding). The piston rings are probably a bit worn, but my guess is that the big thing is the valve seals. On the xr400 series motors they harden very quickly, so if they get some dirt in them, the motion of the valves will really eat away at it.
