Pure stupidity yes but it's not even funny how many idiots I see doing this type of crap all the time. They just rev the **** out of there motor to get someones attention and they think it's "cool" to put big ruts in the trail.

you can always do a new top end and then do a compression test. then when it starts to drop then you know you need a new top end. everyone rides different runs different mix ratios has different mods. so pistons can last from anywhere from 13 or more to 1 year depending on maintenace and how you ride.

I got my R in 1998.IT was still on the original bore.I broke the center casing and when I tore it down I found out the piston was cracked.I had it bored .020 over and bought a wiseco piston kit.I rode it till november like that. All hard hours to.When I tore the top-end end down it still had cross hatch marks on the cylinder.IT was starting to get a little bit of "blow by" though.I didn't do sa compression test. But it only took 1-2 kicks to start it.

Like trapperb1 and others said.It is how U break in your top-end and what kind of oil U run.I ran maxima castrol 927.So far I have very good luck with it.As a matter of fact while I am waiting to get The ESR330 kit I am going to rehone the cylinder and by new rings.(if the ring gap isn't to big.
