In the manual it says to replace the top end every 30 hours. But im sure you could get alot more hours out of a top end depending on what kind of riding your going to do. I have about 40 hours on my top end.

How long a topend lasts depends upon many factors. I have seen riders wear one out in 15 min. Started it up and then took off down the road wide open. Some other riders have gotten a full 2 years. It all depends on if you break it in good and let the engine warm up for about 5 min the first time that you ride it each day. If you take care of it and clean the airfilter often it should last you around a year.
The cost if you do the tear down your self will be about $95 piston, gaskets $20-$40, and boring about $30 plus some anti-freeze. These are some ballpark numbers.
The R will be a much better quad than the warrier, but it will cost more to run.

Well my R is on its 1st or second bore and it's still thight and running well on this bore. 1 or 2 bores has lasted 14 years so you can obviously get more ten 30 hours on it. If you beat on it. it's gone go quick but if you just ride then it will last a long time.

You can get a lot more than 30 hours out of a piston, but, you may not. It's a crap shoot. I've seen guys go 13 years on stock piston, and others go about 3 days. Many factors involved besides how broken in and riden.
A stock cylinder can be bored usually up to 8 times (.080 over), but can be honed many more times. For instance, you want to do a top-end, you pull it apart and find you don't need a bore, just cross-hatching (honing). You can hone several times in between bores.
My last top-end cost $45 for the bore, $35 for aftermarket gaskets, $105 for piston/wrist pin/circlips/rings (Weisco), $20 for head clean-up/mill. While at it, I always replace left side crank seal, $15.
Take cylinder to shop on Monday, pick it up Friday, have it running Saturday.

I am rebuilding my 250R right now also, this is the first time it's been opened up. Thats 17 years on the stock piston/bore.

I've had my R for about 1 year and the compression is still at around 160 lbs without ever tearing into it.. This is running 50:1 yamalude R-1.

Killer250R,
What good is a 250r if you don't beat on it?
I run mine pretty hard and got almost a year out of a bore and piston. Of course that was racing MX all year along with practice time.
I did buy a new set of rings half way throught the year though.
I'm sure that the more stock that your engine is, the longer your piston/bore will last.

Retro,
There is a difference between riding a 250R like it should be ridden and beating on it. To me high revs is normal on the R, constant brake stands high revs in neutral stuff like that is what I would consder beating on the motor.

Well I guess there is pure stupidity and there is riding it hard.
These things can handle almost anything you can dish out.
