Imgettinga400ex, sorry to disagree with you, but that cliche about the 300 out performing the 400 in the tight stuff makes about as much sence as saying a pin knife is better than a .357 mag for hand to hand combat. It's incorrect and just plain silly. Having owned and ridden both machines (still have the 300), I can tell you that the only time the 300 handles easyer than the 400 is when you're loading it into a toy hauler. Even then the difference is pretty marginal. I doubt if you could purposely design a track, trail, or what ever where a 300EX could stay in sight of a 400EX being piloted by a determined rider.

ImGettinA400ex

Comeon of course a 400EX handles better then a 300EX!! A 400EX is the second best handling quad ever made. The 400EX handles better everywhere, is faster, better jumper ect ect ect.

BUT If I kept my 250R and had the choice between the two I would buy a 300EX cause they're so much fun just to screw around on. Plus you can have some fun with the reverse.

Get the 400, unless you exclusively ride VERY tight trails (the 300 is just enough smaller than the 400 that I can whip it around more easily). I am 5'7" and 180 lbs, and I don't feel cramped on the 300, but a bigger person probably would (are you a teenager who is still growing??). On the other hand, the 400 will be more versitile in a variety of conditions.

You get bored with the 300ex really fast. For the small difference in price you get a much better suspension, much better engine, better tires and better brakes. Trying to upgrade latter on will cost you an arm and a leg. The only thing the 300ex has on the 400ex is reverse which I have never missed.

I just wanted to weigh in on the "tight stuff" issue. What the XR250R (arguably the ultimate woods machine) is to the dirt bike world, the 300 is to the quad world. For tight trails, I would rate the 300 as THE BEST TRAIL BIKE THERE IS, and the 400 is almost as good (the Rancher is a darn good trail bike too!). The 300 has the edge because of its smaller size, and quick handling. I can RAIL around tight corners on the 300, that I have to RIDE around on the 400. Sure it has less power than most bikes, but it's very tractable power. ALL THE POWER GETS TO THE GROUND!! A lot of bigger bikes just waste their excess power spinning their wheels on a hairpin turn.

That said, I have to admit that I usually ride the 400. Continuing the analogy, what the XR400R is to the bike world (a versatile all around machine) the 400EX is to the quad world. Rarely is a ride just all tight stuff, and the 400 handles a variety of conditions better than the 300.

Imgetiinga400EX, "...if anything the 300 handles better...", your exact quote and in context. Disagreeing with you doesn't constitute "giving you crap". If you can't handle the rough & tumble of the arena of ideas you might think of taking up a more pedestrian hobby, like maybe quilting.

YZguy, I think of the 300EX as the equivalent of the XR200 (i.e. it's a great chicks bike), while the 400EX is the XR250 of the quad world (i.e. mellow, nimble, fun). Honda doesn't make an ATV in the same catagory as the XR400, which is why so many poeple are eager for a TRX450R or a TRX650R. Only Yamaha, C-dale, and Bombardier fill that nitch now.

I'd love to see them come out with a four wheel equivalent to the XR650! I guess it'd have to be a fuel injected V-twin, or a very big thumper.

Why does some people think the 300EX is something you grow right out of? I have been riding 12 years, and I never felt like it was down on power (except when I was racing my uncles Grizzly 660 in a drag race). Yeah the 400 has more power, I hope it would be with it being more than 100cc's bigger! I also never have wanted more suspension travel, when you are out on the trails, few jumps come along. Reverse is a must for where I live. Picking up the front end is not something I want to do everytime I am in a tight space and need to turn around. Anyways, I am not saying that he should get a 300 or 400. I just don't like seeing all these people saying that you grow out of the 300 quickly. And that it will never match up to the 400, because it can out on the trails. I know I have done it.
