Does anyone elses 400ex tick in the top end?

Try adjusting your valves.

I've already done that, it's still there, new piston in it and it still there. new cam and it still there. Every thing looks ok as far as wear patterns go.

Take the tick off VERY carefully with tweesers being sure to get all of it out. Then clean with alcohol. hehe

Check the tightness of the bolts that hold the sproket on the cam. When my cam was installed, I accedentally used the wrong grade loctite, and my cam bolts came loose and make a very audible tick.

Warpig, I bet I know what it is. Its your valve spring. Mine done the same thing 3 months after I got it, and warranty DOES NOT cover it! Stupid, but I dont know why it dont! But tear it apart or have someone else do it and look at your valve spring and see if its popped off. If it is, you need to get that fixed ASAP cuz it could warp your valves. I noticed the very same noise and had it checked out, my valve spring was off and he put it back on and I aint heard the noise since!

LOL! You beat me to it!


The XR/EX motors have a tendancy to burn exhaust valves. This happened to my 400EX and also to my bro-in-laws XR250.
