TextHey everyone, Right now I ride a 1991 Honda XR250R but I think I am going to sell it for a Honda 400ex, I was going to get a Kawasaki KDX220(Dirt Bike)but I think I want to get a quad, I can handle my XR250R fine so you think I will love the 400ex? How much more power will the 400ex have over my XR250R, My friend said that he raced a Stock 400ex on his Stock XR250R and stayed with it until he hit 6th gear on his XR and then he started pulling away from the 400. I have a hard time believing this, What Kind of price can I expect to pay OTD here in North Carolina? I am 16 years old, probably about 5'11" and about 150lbs, I know I can handle the 400ex, How is the suspension and handling,Realibilty, I will just be trailriding,So little jumps, I have alot of spots to go fast so I need very quick accelaration and Top-End speed, I think the 400ex fits the bill,What about you guys, I am going to buy knew also, Thanks Matt,Sorry for the long post

400EX sounds perfect. I doubt a XR250 will hang with a 400. There is just too much power in the 400 motor (vs. the 250 motor) for the XR to hang with it, despite the extra weight.

The 400's suspention/handling are its strongest point. Its A+++.
If its power isnt enough for you, even though Im sure it will be coming off of a 250, you can always upgrade.

My 400 with a WB pipe, and 400$ (including machine work) IMS440 kit can hang wheel to wheel with a stock 660R Raptor. (fast quad) The 400s handling is only matched by the old Honda 250R's, and the major expensive Cannondales, and some even argue that point.

You will love it.

Mr350X thanks for the reply, I thought the 400ex would be the best choice for me, I sat on one at a dealer a while back and it felt perfect,The riding position,Suspension was Plush,Easy Clutch Pull, To sum it all up it felt grate,I then went over and sat on a 300ex and it felt a little to low for me and a little bit tight compared to the 400ex, I like the reverse of the 300ex but if I get the 400 stuck I will just pick up the front and turn it around, Thanks again Matt

400ex2001,
As the former owner of a 97 KDX-220 and now the owner of a 01 KDX-200 they are great dirtbikes for the money and would overtake the XR250 pretty quick and will hang with the XR400. You would have loved the low end power on the KDX-220.
The XR-250 will keep up with the 400EX because of the weight issue. I might be off on the numbers but the XR250 weighs about 130 pounds less than the 400EX.
I would think the power you will feel will be slightly more with the 400-EX and you can't go wrong with choosing it as your first quad.
I used to be a die hard dirtbike rider but having quads is so much fun. I am just glad I can afford both.

I had a 400EX for my first quad, great bike. It is the XR250 of quads; nimble, mellow, fun, great wheelie machine. My riding partner has an XR 250, and while I've never drag raced him, I could run off and leave him on most trails (this was not the case when he was on his CR250). The XR will out climb and out jump the EX and, obviously, out single track it, but otherwise I think the EX has the edge.

I went from a older 250 Trail bike then threw a few other quads before I got mx 400EX and I do'nt know why I waited so long.

The 400EX has the best stock suspention out there and great power for trails, Also, if you want, every vendor out there sells after market parts for it. You can get alot more power out of it and still have a very reliable quad...
