Hello All,

I have been using Kenda 22x11x10 Dune Runner tires left over from my Polaris quad for a few years. I purchased rims at the time to get them to fit the honda. I hardly get the 400EX into 4th gear with tires this big. What size paddle tire works best on a stock 400EX ? I plan to mount the dune runners up on the polaris bolt style rims and sell them to a friend for his "slowaris". The stock 400EX tire size is 20x10x9. I don't see many paddle tires to choose from in the stock size. As a side note I can't wait to see how the Michigan DNR is going to enforce the new noise limit of 94db at Silver Lake this year. Not one aftermarket pipe is below the limit.
Might be alot of people who can't ride. Seems to be their goal between that and the vouchers to try and get into the parking lot.

At first I used my stock tires for the dunes up in Silver Lake. Then finally I said to hell with it and at the beginning of last summer I bought a set of GBC Sand Devils size 20x10x10. They do a great job in the sand and I haven't had any problems due to the 10 inch rim over the 9 inch stock rim size. When I bought my paddles, I had them mounted on a set of Douglas red label rims. I had to drill holes out a little bit so that the bolts would go on easier. They went on fine, but I had a hard time getting them off.

As for the 94dB limit for Silver Lake, yeah I agree, I can't wait to see how strict Michigan's DNR is going to be on this issue. I have an FMF Powercore IV pipe on my 400ex. I know that I am over the 94db limit, however my FMF pipe came with a U.S.F.S. approved spark arrester. I (as well as everyone else) hope that the DNR doesn't make a big deal about this. I think that the reason for this 94dB limit is to enforce people who do have aftermarket exhaust's have a spark arrester. Because I remember last year, many people where riding without spark arresters and getting away with it because the DNR couldn't really do anything about it. Yeah, there was a law that you had to have a spark arrester, but I don't think they really enforced it. This year however, I believe that they will enforce it.

I remember last year when you drove into the park and purchased your daily passes from the DNR, there was a sign talking about the new changed rule for 2002. I read the sign and personally went to the DNR office and talked to someone about it. I explained to them that I had an aftermarket exhaust but also had a U.S.F.S. approved spark arrester. They acted like because I did have a U.S.F.S. approved spark arrester, they said that it shouldn't be a problem. Given, if what they said it true, I don't think that this will be a problem. As long as people have spark arrester's. See, you can tell who has a spark arrester and who doesn't (especially 4-strokes). For example, the Volkswagon Sand Rails that people run up there (dune buggies) they are running straight exhaust. That is why they are so loud when you hear them step on the gas and fly up all of the big dunes. 4-stoke quads and motorcycles are not nearly as loud when they step on it climbing up big dunes.

Seriously, have you ever been up to Silver Lake on a Saturday or Sunday? I am sure that you have. Well anyway, I have been up there on the weekends. And I have seen how crowded it gets especially on the weekends. It has gotten to be so popular, now you have to get a voucher the night before in order gurantee a parking spot for the next day. Now, knowing that how crowded it gets, how many people to you think run aftermarket exhausts compared to people who run stock exhaust systems? I would say that there are more people that run aftermarket exhaust systems them people who run stock exhaust systems. Given that, I don't think that the majority of people who run aftermarket exhaust systems would be 1.) very happy about the 94dB limit, and 2.) want to ride there anymore do to the new law. Which means that there would be a in my opinion a significant loss in revenue each year to the DNR on people coming to the dunes to ride. What I am trying to say is a lot of people put a ton of money (performance mods) into their machines and they want a place to ride what they built. If Silver Lake is strict about this new law, I am willing to bet that many people will not ride at Silver Lake and take their business somewhere else.

Thanks for the response Fourtracker14. I had a similar problem with tightening the lugnuts on the aftermarket wheel pinching the aluminum and swedging the wheel on the studs. I put flat washers on the studs before the lugnuts and solved that problem. Running a 20inch tire would definetly help versues the 22inch tire. I may give that a try when I pick out tires for the 400EX. And I have been to the dunes on the weekends. Most of the time I go is on a weekend. All though I went once during the week and about had the place to myself. I would say I liked the first come first serve system of the past better. I would drive up on a Friday night and get a campground. Come Saturday morning I would get up at 6:30am and load up. I was usually in line by 7:30am. Once the gates opened I would get in around 9:30am. I admit waiting in line was no fun but I did get in. With the new rules I leave on Friday evening after work and arrive around 8:30pm to 10:00 pm. I then get burned because the parking lot vouchers are all gone. I get a standby voucher and wait till I get in, if at all. I realize the vouchers arn't handed out till 6:00pm on Friday evening but this means I need to blast out of work early to get in line for the voucher. The new system has resulted in fewer trips to the dunes for me. I guess making it inconvenient to go cuts down on the crowd and is the desired result.
