Rear width problem on 250X...
#1
Well guys, i come to you all for your wealth of knowledge and ideas. I am modifing my 250X front end by doing the 250R conversion with a-arms and shocks. Now by doing this my front end will be approximatly 2 inches wider when done. That means my rear end will be narrower. I am going to be racing motocross this summer. I guess my question would to you fellas would be what should I do about the rear. I would like to get an extended rear axle, but the price issue is big for me, since im putting myself through college. My other choice would be to get some wheel spacers, which i cringe at the thought of them. Are the spacers going to bend my stocker right away, or be alright? Help me out guys, I know you all of some ideas.
One more thing, would a 250R axle fit my 250X rearend... Thanks a ton

While they work OK for the occasional jumper, I wouldn't feel safe racing moto-cross with them at all. You risk bending or breaking your stock axle and also risk breaking your wheel studs off at the hub. I wouldn't chance it.

BigDogX, I have done this conversion with the 250r a-arms and shocks and the front wheels do not stick out that much further than the rear tires. They may be the same or up to an inch wider in the front, I have never actually measured them but I did eye it to see. I am running douglas rims and they may have an offset to them but I'm not sure. I have never had a problem with my stock axle, it is plenty wide enough to handle well and I have cleared 40' ramp to flat land jumps with out bending it and I'm sure it could take alot more. I have to say though that I have never raced on a mx track but have taken it to the track on practice days and it did fine. Aftermarket axles are always nice though cuz you can adjust your width if you feel the need to but if you don't have the cash keep an eye on ebay or the classifieds.
Another thing is with the 250r arms is that when put them on the 250x they have a reverse chamber, meaning they stick out further at the top than the bottom, they straighten up when you put your weight on the bike. So you may want to go with chamber adjustable arms.
Like KNOWSALOT said, I would keep away from the spacers.
I don't believe the 250r axle would work either.
good luck.

Thanks guys, I have 1987 front a-arms and they are camber adjustable, but the ball joint would be at a nasty angle if i adjusted them some more. Anyway, i think ill try the stock axle for now, and when i get some money this summer i think ill upgrade. Later, and thanks for your replies.

Varmit cool i need a bent alxe is it really bent bad because i need one that's bent really really bad hehe im just messin around....you don't want wheel spacers dude like everyone has already said you are really risking a bent or broken alxe. they also help out alot with cooking your bearing's because. when you add spacer's to a stock alxe it flex's more and will harsh your bearing's BAD. and with doing mx you don't want any more help cooking those hehe you could buy rim's with more of an offset that is where it mount's would be closer to the inside part of the rim it's self makeing your quad wider
