400EX vs. 440EX
#1
Hey guys, some of you have the big bore kits, how do they compare to the stock motor? How much difference do you really feel? I really dislike getting rid of my 400ex, and would just like to have a full opinion. Say a pipe and 440 kit. Give some comparisons with other quads as well. thanks

To your question about the 440 or 400 its all up to the amount of wheelie pulling power you want.I have a fully built trinity 440 with 39 fcr and no airbox its fast but with all the money in it I still can only put a few bikes on a healthy 400. if you want bang for the buck put a pipe on it put a good cam and bump up the compression. I've been very impressed with bikes setup like that. The only real advantage to a 440 is being able to pull taller gears and if you don't ride wide open what's the use.

Hey guys, I want to thank you so far for the comments. Here's the deal. I have my 400EX, love it to death, the motor is just a bit underpowered for me. I've rode it a ton, so I just want to move up. Its all stock of course. I was thinking if i sell it , ill grab one of those cannondales. The trick is, I really hate the thought of letting my EX go. I love the frame, plastic, ergonomics, everything except the underpowering. Its going to be a good 2000 dollar difference in purchasing the cannibal, but the thing is, how much difference can my 400ex accomplish if i bump up some stuff. I like the feel of the 400ex so much that I was thinking of buying a new one, and just putting a pipe, cam, and big bore kit on it. But the trick really resides in is how much of a difference from stock is it truly going to be. Is it a slight pull? IS it a night and day difference, and how is the fun factor overall? I love to ride wheelies, and this thing has GOT to be a hillclimbing beast, so what do ya think? Is it worth it to keep going with the 400ex and spend some money on the motor, or is it just better to sell it and get the cannibal? It seems the market for the 400ex's and the below have just plummetted, and I dont feel that the selling price is justified by the condition of my quad, so im highly influenced to keep it and work on motor mods and stuff, but how much are we really talking about? Say this... Slip on pipe, a cam, maybe a big bore kit (i seen them on moto man for 224.99), and what else really? Whats the ballpark price for doing all this do you figure? Im going to really look more into this, but i'd sure love some comments from others on everything stated so far. The main thing for me is, do i want to pay a whole lotta money for a cannondale, or would i like to buy a 400ex that i love, and just build it up a bit for less? If the power difference after modifications is great, then im very interested. If it does a slight difference, then i wont bother.

My IMS 440 kit was 299. (plus about a hundred bucks for the machine work at your local shop)
My 440 with 10.3/1 JE Piston and White bros pipe is quite powerfull.
At Glamis the other day I rode a wheelie on the way to comp hill through third gear. Seemed like I was keeping up with traffic on the highway with the front end about a foot and a half off the ground. Too much fun. If I were to drop a web cam in it, (you should along with the big bore) If would be even quicker. Just keep the EX.

Thanks, nice pics!
Well, for me, Im certain im going to buy a new quad. My real question Im asking myself is this, do i go and get a new 400ex, then modify it? OR just go and get a cannibal and leave it alone? I figure there's going to be at least 500 involved with the 400ex modifications to start out with. It'll need a pipe, about 230 bucks, and the big bore kit was like 225, how much are cams? So by that time, with a new quad, tax, and the modifications, im back up to the price of the cannibal. Im not sure which to get yet, but im certain it'll be a new quad. I really love the honda's, its tough to just let the EX go for something else thats not well known yet.

Ok here's the deal if you want a cannibal get one. A built four hundred will probably be almost as fast as one but no quite. If you love the 400 keep it. I just bought a raptor love it to death but it still is not half as fun or nearly as ridable as the 400. My 440 with run with modified banshee's and it will whip slightly modified raptors. But it is all in what your looking for. A cannibal is a race motor from the factory all you can really do to them is a pipe and a big bore then they are to the extreme ends of being built. I ran against a FX400 once w/pipe and it was fast but not fast enough to warrant paying that much for one. In reliability mine has been put through the ringer a few time with minimal problem. The only major problem was a cam chain brek and that leads to all kinds of problems then. A cam is about 160 for the cam and then about the same for the core charge but you get that back when you send your cam in. The cam I would recommend is web cam the grind number is 450/451. It is 270 deg. cam. It what i run in my bike. I'm not a big fan of porting so that one is up to you. The pipe I would recommend is Curtis Sparks X-6. With the cam you will need valve springs also. My 440 has out ran DS650 also stock raptor and banshee's no problem not many cannibal's around here to compare to though.
hope I've been some help.
I might ride blue but I bleed red.

mhargrove, how's the reliabilty on that motor? honestly! If these people want to buy all that stuff and perform regular maintance requiring to keep buying parts or have the motor blow up that's fine. It's always hard to find a situation where you can have your cake and eat it too! I'm just saying to let people know that the mod's you made may not be for everyone who just want a dependable regular trail/mx/dune machine.
