high RPM misfire on my "R" ?
#1
i just got through rebuiling the chassis on my R and was able to make it out to dumont for 2 days of riding. i noticed though that whenever i would rev the motor out while climbing a dune that teh motor would make a funny noise( im assuming this to be a misfire) it wasn't a pop and it wasnt erratic. it was a very predictable and constant noise. unfortunatley i since i live 3-4 hours from any dunes i dont have teh ability to make an adjustment and give it a test, so im left to do everything possible and hope that one of those mods can make teh difference. so far ive redone my ground( rather than making contact with the bolt head teh ground wire is under teh radiator mount and against bare frame) i respun the boot onto the coilwire incase i wasnt getting good contact, replaced teh plug and cleaned out the carb.. the float level did need to be adjusted i measured it a@ 21 mm and reset it to 16mm... i currently have a 168 main jet in a 35mm (34mm honed)kiehin carb... any one else had this problem? and ideas?
also im ruinning a ct midraneg pipe, witch i dont think is probably effective for my use ( advanced duning) so im probably going to an ESR tx 5

High rev misfire can also be the result of improper jetting. Have you done a plug check? You can do this at home (provided your neighbors don't get too upset). Main jets don't cost too much, like about $4 each, so pick up several. When you do the plug check, black=too rich, white=too lean. Too rich, go down a size in the main and check again. Too lean, the opposite. Buy several plugs while you're at the store buying jets; again, they're only about $2 each, so buy several.
One more thing; gap them to .022. I don't care what your manual says, .022 works because stock ignition is kinda weak.

ive got all teh stuff to jet.. new jets, plugs etc. but i odnt have a road long enough to top out in fifth(i dont think the chp would mind me doin WOT plug chops on teh 5 Fwy.) also i wasnt to sure if this miss was due to jetting because it seemed Too consistent and almost melodic.. but thanx for your input

Trapper is right, it's a good 95% chance that your problem is the jetting. Something else to consider is the elevation, check and see what the elevation difference is between your home and Dumont. From what you wrote I get the impression it only happens when your on the dunes at dumont.

Trx250Rob has a point, but it's like I was saying; you gotta do the plug checks.
Santa Ana is the same elevation as where I'm at (Anaheim). If you jet correctly for home, it should be close for Dumont which I think is about 3000ft (don't quote me on that, but since you gotta go over the Cajon Pass to get there and then you climb some more after you leave Victorville, I'm guessing), but you still may need to rejet when you get to Dumont.
On the other hand, Glamis is almost the same as home (just under 300ft) but the air is much drier (so is Dumont).
And I don't see why you can't do plug checks on I5! Doesn't seem fair to me.
