Take a look: http://home.earthlink.net/~gellett/sahara.htm
The pics here are on a completely stock bike. These pics will speak volumes about the 400EX's jumping prowess.

In stock form there currently is not a bike that can compete with the all around handling of the 400EX.

i have a 2000 400ex and i think it handles excellent. it seems pretty effotless to do a lot of things, it just feels really comfortable. i would reccomend a 400ex to almost anyone.

In the air, this thing is beautiful. It has the best stock suspension available (some discussion will occur over the DS650). It makes you more confident which is sometimes dangerous.

It is really that good. If you could buy a 2000 TRX250R I would. But since the next best thing is a 400EX, then your choice should be simple..

If you ride in the desert then consider the Banshee or DS650. If not, look hard at the EX.

HEY WE HAVE 2 400 EX OWNERS HERE NOW AND AS FAR AS WERE CONCERNED ITS PUT IN ONE SIMPLE WORD AWESOME! THIS IS THE BEST ALL AROUND 4 STROKE MACHINE I EVER RODE! IT WILL MAKE YOU TO CONFIDENT THOUGH AND CAN GET YOU IN TO SOME TROUBLE. AS FAR AS CHANGES I TURNED THE FRONT TIRES AROUND AND IT HANDLES THE TRAILS BETTER THIS WAY AND STEERING EFFORT IS BETTER. BEST MACHINE I HAVE EVER OWNED BUT I MAY TRADE IT AND MY FOREMAN FOR A RUBICON IF HONDA GETS THIS ON THE WAY I WANT IT. I AM HAVING A HARD TIME THINKING ABOUT IT BECAUSE THERE ARE SO MANY THINGS I CAN DO TO IT TO MAKE IT MINE. CUSTOMIZE!! IF YOUR IN THE MARKET FOR A 4 STROKE SPORT MACHINE THIS IS THE ONE.

PROUD OWNER: 98 HONDA FOREMAN 450 ES
99 HONDA 400 EX

Stop looking and go get it. It is that good. We can argue this forever - but I disagree with the other guy - I spend 90% of time in the desert (GLAMIS) - and its good there too. Smooth powerband - and although it may not outrun the Banshee - It will scare it ALOT. More than any bike out in the desert. And sometimes, I have witnesses - it will even pass one. Lots of mods to make this THUMPER strong - reliability is superior!! Any day over a 2 stroke - if all you want to do is ride and forget about any major maintenance. Suspension is great - scarry at times. You like air - well it feels like youre on a 125.. light!! I spend most of the time trying to keep the front wheels down - at the desert. Anyway, go get one and forget about it!

You will have no complaints with a 400EX. I ride mine in northern Minnesota and it is perfect. It is hard to describe how much fun it is.

Last month I went to Glamis and rode a '00 400EX. I loved it! It made it up every hill, minus one (a modified-250R barely did). It won't beat a Banshee or 250R in a drag or up a hill, but when you're thrashing, it will be right there. It is deceptively fast.

Suspension and handling are top-notch. Like people have said before, you can go harder for longer. Buy a 400EX. You won't be dissapointed.

I asked the same question and as of three O' clock Saturday I own one 00' 400EX. Very smooth power the suspension is nice I have wheelied, jumped, and power slid some corners and it is very "HONDA". I have 2 friends with 00' Banshee's, and they are always mixing gas or tuning, or rebuilding top ends. The 400EX is a great trail and over all recreational unit. The lights work well at night. Feels very light I don't know where the put those 374 LBS? Honda's quality and reliability are why I bought this machine. The 400ex is narrower and shorter than the Banshee making it much better on tight courses along with better suspension you have a winner.
