The 250R weighs 328 pounds, 400EX I believe is 375.

I don't see two-strokes as that much more work. When I got my R about a year ago it was a basket case. I spent 3 months working on it almost every night. After putting lots of elbow grease into it I could honestly say it is extremely reliable and almost maint free. Other that tighten the chain, cleaning the airfilter and changing the oil on it, I could honestly say I have not done a thing to it in 9 months. Actually it's getting boring, I like working on it.

Ohio, putting an R engine I think would make it lighter. Not only are r engines lighter but you also don't have a starter engine or a battery. I would say thats good for about 30 lbs.

The lighter engine along with the aluminum parts on the 400 that the R's don't have, you may be a little lighter than a 250r. How easy was the swap? Did you use a 85-88 ATC motor? Was any permanent modification needed? Where did you go for the exhaust? I'm interested in this the more that I think about it. I've done motorswaps on motorcycles before, but never on a quad.

The motor is out of an 86 atc 250r and it fully interchangable with the 400.I fully rebuilt the motor ,new crank,bearings,265 kit from esr.Ialso used the esr pipe which i had to shorten between 1/3 and 1/2 an in" to get it through the frame and clear the tie rod.The radiator is custom and mounts where the oil cooler and tank used to mount.I used 2 right hand front engine mounts off the 400ex and put the left one back to front. With the rear (swingarm)mount i just cut down the existing spacers. The lower mounting point was a custom made cradle, the head stay was also custom which all use existing 400ex mounting points.I hope to get my first ride hopefully next week. The whole reason for the motor swap was that the trx 250r was never made available in Australia. And i just had to get me one...Thank again oz_400ex

p.s I should have some pics soon.
