Painting A arms
#1
I know the best way would be to have them powder coated but don't really want to spend the money right now. I was kind of hoping to just paint them for now and have that last a year or two. Any suggestions before I do so? Like what kind of paint, primer, should I use clearcoat, whats the best way to remove the old paint, stuff like that. Any suggestions will help. Thanks.

save up and powdercoat them..if you plan on keeping your quad...or you can stirip them down polish them and clearcoat them...looks like polished alluminum.
to strip them you can sandblast, beadblast, or use this stuff called aircraft stripper...BE CAREFULL that is mean stuff!!! read all the warnings and follow closely!
use automotive paint and primer, a little more expensive but better if you choos to paint

I was on a budjet this winter when I went through my quad. I tore it down to the frame and sandblasted it, used an enamal primer, used an enamal paint, and then used automotive clear coat on it. If you do this do it where it is very warm. I had to set my stuff in front of a torpedo heater for 6 hours to get the paint to cure on so it wouldn't chip off easily. There's pictures of it in my signature take a look. I'm going to get it powdercoated this winter though. The spary paint was just something to have it look good for a short time.

3M makes a clear protective layer you can put on your lower A-arms to keep them from getting scratched. Use the thin version used to protect dirtbike radiator shrouds so that it won't peel your paint when you decide to take it off. This version doesn't have gobs of glue.
The clear will eventually start to "yellow" after a while, so you will have to change it out.
Don't use the automotive grade from the auto parts house. It wont "curl" enough for the A-arm and the glue used on that grade WILL peel your paint. Learned that from first hand experience.
