Hello Friends. Have been reading the different posts for several months now. One topic that comes up time and time again is "How fast will it go"? I see replies of 44,51,56 with the throtttle peged, etc.etc. Its amazing to me what some of these motors can take. I ride a TRX300 and have never had the throttle lever pushed more than half way in any gear. There are two reasons for this. Number one being a fear of losing control of the machine at high speeds. I don't fancy the idea of leaving patches of skin spread accross the asphalt and I've already had my share of broken bones. The second reason being a fear of damaging the engine by prolonged high rpms. Since there is no tach on the machine, I measure the rpms by ear. When it sounds like they are getting to high, I back off the throttle. I have been accused of being to soft on the machine.
I guess my questions are, how much can these motors take? Is running flat out, wide open, all the time, acceptable treatment for the motor if you wan't it to last? Are these motors preset at the factory not to exceed an rpm range that will harm the the motor?
Friends, I'm clueless here. Your input would be appreciated.
Thanks

My own opinion; no facts or experimental data to back it up:
I don't think you can hurt ATV engines by running them at high rpm's, because they are limited either by an electronic rpm limter, or, in many cases, by valving limitaions; the stock valving (size, lift, timing, valvetrain intertia) will not permit the engines to rev to dangerous levels.
Exceptions may exist, or I could be entirely wrong; I've shared my opinion only.
