I was thinking about getting a winch that you use by hand. you know the kind you use by hand and pull it back like a rachet i gusse well i need to know if your stuck in mud do you have to be supper strong to use it?

 

I do know that Cabela's has one like you described in the ATV section, but I don't know if its any good.

 

I'm not sure what products exactly you're talking about; with a comealong, aka "cable hoist," a ratcheting device, ordinary human strength produces 2000-4000 # (depending upon model chosen) extraction force, a low-cost insurance policy.

The biggest drawback that I can see is-

The one in Cabelas catalog is only rated at 900lbs. it wouldn't take much "stuck" to overwhelm this rating.
You would probably be better served with a conventional comealong. I've seen them listed for less than $30.00 and they have a much higher weight rating.

 

I've unstuck many jeeps with a come-a-long. It would be alot easier to free a quad than a 2800 pound jeep. Just carry extra straps,cable,heavy rope,etc. They don't have much cable on them.

 

I have a chain come-a-long with 100 feet of 1/4" cable that is rated 12,000 LB's I pulled the recever hitch off a 88 4runner with it.. picked it up at a local logging supply fro $80

Harbor Freight tools sells a hand crank winch with a 2000 lb capacity that comes with 25 ft of cable for $30. You would need to fabricate a mounting bracket. Hope this helps.
