I have been having a ton of problems with my axle bearing coming loose while I am riding. I have tightened the jam nut as tight as I can get it, and it still comes loose. Does anyone know the solution for this problem, or do any of the aftermarket lock nuts work better?

The lock nut has nothing to do with how tight your bearing are on your quad, you have to back it off and turn the smaller nut against a ring (you have to turn the big lock nut toward the rear of the quad to loosen it, it has left hand threads.) You have to turn the smaller one with the flange counter clockwise to loosen it. Do you have the special 56mm honda lock nut wrench, and a 1 and 3/4 inch wrench to torque them down properly? I had problems with my 300ex after the bearings wore and I could rotate the locknut by hand on the splines. You can't just tighten the hell out of the bearings, or they will wear faster and give you more rolling resistance. The best way to do it is to use the correct torques listed in the service manual for your quad.

I was really tired while I was writing that post, so hopefully you can understand why it makes no sense at all. The problem is the jam nut comes loose, and that allows the axle nut to come loose as well.
And, I don't know what a log nut is, I meant to say lock nut.

After you tighten the lock nut wrap tape around the threads i have done this on an old 250r and my quadzilla it works fine unless you want to shell out $179-199 for a lonestar or dura blue lock nut that lock with allen bots i have one on my TC 405ex and it works great

I have a Dura Blue lock not on my R, my stock once stripped out. It is only 50$ and has worked perfect. You also would want to rap it with tape too. Just to keep the threats clean. Dave

Everybody's given good advise, what I'd like to add is DON'T tighten the nut that pulls the axle tight too hard, just as it gets resistance, all you need is maybe 1/4 to 1/2 a turn more to get it snug. Then tighten the jam nut and wrap it with either electrical or duck tape to keep it from coming loose. If you overtighten the axle, you will cause the bearings to fail sooner than they should.

Good Luck,

Sickman

What happens is that the threads on the piece of male pipe wears out. If you measure them, you will notice that the measurement at the end is smaller than in the middle. This comes from use. The reason that the thing comes lose is that it is jumping the threads. The dura blue nut will wear out the same way after many uses. The on that seems to be holding up the best is the Rad lock nut for now.
