I took my 400EX for some serious wodds riding today (first time ever in dirt with it!!!) and I was woundering how could I get some more low end torque without getting a pipe that makes it loud? I'm just in love with the feeling of torque!!!

Drop a tooth on the front sprocket.

yep, he is right drop a tooth otherwise you will be spending alot of money for the same effect. that engine has 30% more torque than the XR 400 does, so not sure how much more it can put out.

Wait a second guys...doesn't he need to "gain" a tooth if replacing the front sprocket to gain low-end torque? It is my understanding that you gain low-end when you bring the two sprockets closer together in tooth size. Since the front is smaller generally you would either decrease the rear or increase the front to gain low-end.

Am I all wet?

Dropping a tooth on the front sprocket will give you better acceleration and adding will give a higher top end. You must be crazy about torque if you want more on that thing! A friend of mine has a 400ex and I think he should add a tooth to the front, it's kind of hard to steer when the front wheels are toching the ground :->. Besides it tops out way to early. Later.
