Just got my new 00' 400EX about a month ago and it seems everytime i start her up(cold or warm outside) in the morning for the first time it smokes a little. it only lasts for about a minute and then quits. it looks like it is burning oil but it was broke in exceptionaly well and never ragged on. do any of you have this same problem?? any suggestions on what it could be. oh yeah, it even did it when i started it up at the dealership to pull it in the back of my truck but the mechanic said it was just the new packing in the muffler.

It is normal on many quads, but you may never know!

They are very cold blooded, all Honda's that I've seen so far. I have a 300EX, and the only time it doesn't need choke is on the days when I don't wanna ride because it's too hot out! It should be normal, especially if it's cold out.

My Recon is very very cold blooded. When i start it in the cold it always smokes(white) I have never had a Honda that burned oil...and i have owned many Hondas. Is the smoke blueish? If it is it is burning oil.

white smoke is normal on cool day's, any engine does it. Simply moisture getting heated in the pipe. Blue smoke is defently a problem.

I have a 99 400EX it also smokes some when its cold. I try to let it warm up good before i ride it so that it wont do that. Mine has been like that for almost a year now and still runs strong and is trouble free.

I have never seen my EX smoke. Moisture in the pipe would let it smoke on a cold day but you said it will do it no matter what the weather. I would make sure that the dealership has noted in your file that you were concerned about the smoking and then I would call the factory to get thier take on the story. Compression check would not hurt either. If it is blowing by the rings or past a seal then you will see it under a heavy load. Always get a second opinion.
