I have a friend with a 400ex that wants to have more power. whats a good kit 416.. 440..or should he go with a high comp piston on stock bore with cam and carb?? We mostly ride the dunes. The dunes here are short and steep so he wants more bottom and mid. Thanks for your help!

A 440 kit, with a web cam is probably his best bet.

When I had my 400, I put an IMS440 kit in it, and kept the stock cam.
Torque increased greatly. I would imagin the same setup with a good
cam would be a great performer.

You might want to put a good rod in there, though.
The stock 400 rod isnt strong enough to stand up to
a 440 kit and cam for a long time.

Thanks for the input. What cam specs would you recomend from web cam? what type or brand of rod should he get?Do you think he would have to up grade his carb too?

Not sure about the grind. search for web cams web site.
www.carrilloind.com

This is the Carrillo rods web site. Excellent rods.

If he wanted to spend more money, he could upgrade his carb for more
power. He can make it just about as fast as he can afford.

If he wanted to go ALL OUT, he could get a Curtis Sparts 465 kit.
Big money..... but very very fast.

If your friend doesn't have a pipe and k&n i'd recomend that first. if he has them i'd say go with porting and a cam. for the carb, just rejet. i have the WEBcam mid range and it rocks. however, it does require springs, guides, and rockers. unless your friend is really serious about power it would probably be in his best intrest to stick with head mods like cam, porting, intake, and exhaust. if he does choose to go deeper into the engine a new rod is not imparative just as long as he doesn't run much over 11:1 comp ratio. if he wants more power and he's on the cheep i'd suggest a drop in/recreational cam with a high compression piston (11:1).
if you don't already have a mechanic i know a really good one in portland. he does all of the work that i can't do. his name is bob. he's the parts and service manager at honda of st. johns. have fun.

Get the 416cc kit, web cam MID, Port and polish head, mod the stock carb. Your done, this will also be alot less than resleeve. It also won't run as Hot and less chance of case craking.
