I bought a 250 ex recently and noticed that it was back-firing when I let off the gas - - this was a condition that I noticed the first time I rode it. I called the dealer and asked if I could bring it in (still under warranty) to have the problem corrected. Dealer told me that initial check-up after machine break-in would be 2 hours shop time ($150). 1 hour to make sure everything is still tight and 1 hour to set the intake/exhaust valves to correct the back-fire problem. Shouldn't the valve adjustment at least be covered under warranty? Doesn't the dealer re-coup their costs for warrant work from Honda?

Fell like they're hosing me.

Adjusting valves isn't considered warranty work. They didn't break, they need adjusted. All dealers/manufacturers recomend a 20-50 hour checkup to adjust cables, valves, and give the quad an overall checkup.

It is normal, I haven't heard of any dealer doing it for free.

Initial check up on your 250ex is at 20 hrs.If you dont have 20 hrs yet, complain like hell.Valve adjustment should NOT have to be done before this time.

I work in sales at a Honda dealership and it sounds like you could be getting a snow job?We charge no more than 100 bucks for an oil change, valve adjustment and general look over of the quad, and thats after it gets 20 hrs on it.

"bobvan" you are getting hosed big time. Honestly I think anyone paying $100 to $150 bucks for an oil change and valve adjustment is getting hosed. Do it yourself!!! and save yourself alot of money. An oil filter, and oil should only cost you around $20 dollars, and a valve adjustment is even eaiser than changing the oil itself. But it's up to you! just thought I'd add my 2 cents. Oh and my dealer always throws in an extra six months warranty and the first service for FREE when you by a new quad from him. Don't you wish all dealers were so nice?

Geez, Weedman, you're dealer does sound nice. Although the first service isn't free, this guy was $350.00 chepaer on the quad than anyone else within a 2 hour radius. As well, he's a lot closer - - about a 20 minute drive. So I guess I saved on those areas at least.

i ordered the shop manual for my wifes 250ex, it shows how to do everything, it even gives you the tool numbers that might be needed. look in the back of our owners manual fot the 1-800 number
hers also would pop when you let off of the gas, adjusted the carb and fixed the problem

Thanks Fendercover. If it's not too much trouble, would you be willing to supply me with the proper procedure for adjusting the carb? I will definitely order a manual, however, this would help me in the meantime.
