Well, I have a 300ex that I bought new a couple years ago, and I was in the same situation as you. I didn't want to buy a 400ex that came out just after I bought this quad, and lose all that money so I decided to stick with the 300 for a few years. I added a couple cheap but effective mods that help the quad out a bit. I changed the counter shaft sprocket to a 14t, and this allows you to wind out each gear a little bit longer, and it improves the top end. I also added a K&N filter and had it rejetted, and overall the performance is improved. Most noticeable is the top end however. I could do about 56 stock, but with these couple cheap mods I am doing a little over 60 on a flat paved road.

You're still never going to beat a 400ex without major work, and eventually I'm just going to trade mine in for one, rather then waste money trying to bring the 300 up to a stock 400. But try those couple mods and that should keep you happy for a while. I don't know about a pipe. I've heard good things about em but I'm skeptical if they help at all. Oh, we just got a Polaris Sportsman 500 H.O., and I've always been anti Polaris, but I was very surprised to see how fast this quad is. I couldn't believe that this utility quad gave my 300ex a run for its money. It definatley out accelerates me, and it even started gaining on me in wide open throttle, but at the end we kept exactly even. Without changing the filter and sprocket, the Polaris would have walked past me! Just wanted to vent, I think I'm going to have to start softening up to this quad.

thanks for the input jbertch,

Well if I can get up to 60mph, I already got him beat. His 400ex, isn't "perfect" and he doesn't have the cash to make it run better. See I have a good feeling that it wont take much to beat him. Our top end speeds are already almost the same. Im right at 56 and he sits at like 58, he pulls away slowly.

i think your best solution(even though the quad is new) wuold be to sell teh 300, purchase a used 400 and use the money you had planned on modding the 300 with on the 400, either to compensate in eating up some money because you most likely wont get what you paid for the 300, or in modding out the 400. hope that made cents. just my .02

dude ima tell you now, if u have deepm pockets and want to beat this dude, trade in the 300ex, becuz you WILL get bored with it, AND to make it compete with 400ex's youre going to have to make it a bigger cc, and for that cash your could buy a z400, or a 'dale demo, spend some cash on jetting, a full pipe kit (ima get a yoshi for my z400 when i get it)

now, if you want to just build your 300ex fior fun and to not beat your friend (whats the point of spending all that cash just so u can beat your buddy in a str8 line a couple times? hes still gonna stomp u in a track or trails..) put a fmf megamax II full system, a k&n , re jet, new tires/rims, maybe new suspension, and hel only beat you by 1-2.5 bike lengths, but if he gets it pipednad jetted hel stomp u even worse,

your best bet if u wanna spend the cash, buy a z400, put new suspension, a arms, axle, pipee it jet it, k&n, and youl make him yer b!tch in a drag, or u can leave it stock and just beat him, but if u mod it, he'l totaly regret talkin smack

It's possible. As long as you got a load of money, you can do it.
