a great option would be a 250ex. if you slapped a pro circuit exhaust and a k&n jet kit on one, i THINK it could keep up with or beat a stock 300ex, assuming my math is right.i just bought those accessories for my EX. the problem is, the EX is fairly new (i believe it has only been in production for about 3 years) and i seriously doubt you'll find a decent-running 250 for that kind of money. in case you dont know, the EX is a auto-clutch, manual shift 5-speeder with electric start and a shaft (i.e. no chain maintenance). the throttle is very smooth and there is no hard kick at any part of the powerband. i bought my EX less than a year ago and i've been a happy customer. depending on your size (note: i'm 5'7, 125-130 lbs), power might be an issue for you.are your friend's quads stock or are some modified? let us know your size and what your friend's quads are like.

Conclusion: you cant go wrong with a honda

Hey,

sorry, been out of town for the past week, so i didn't have a chance to reply earlier.

my friends quads are all stock as far as i know. the Scrambler 500's are brand new, as is one of the 300EX's and the Raptor. the group keeps growing as this bug bites more people. i think a few more bought some used quads which are probably mostly stock. the only modded quad would be a Polaris 400, only mild mods, but it's a fast quad to start with.

i'm 5'10" and roughly 130 pounds. yea i know, skiny white boy, but what can ya do? lol

on a side note, while i was in NJ visiting my best friend this past week, he bought an 86' Jeep CJ7 for $700. runs great, a little rust and needs some brake work. it's making me very Jeep envious. lol but i'm still torn between a CJ or a quad. i figure i'll have fun with either so i'll just wait and see what deal pops up first. if it's a quad i'll get that, if it's a jeep then i'll go with that.

later,
bigmac

in that case, buy eiter a 250 or 300 ex. the 250 suits me fine but you might feel kind of cramped on a 250. the 300 is slightly larger

You can look on ebay and if bikes do not meet the sellers reserve price, then contact them. Those are people that are usually motivated to sell and dont want to mess around. That is how I found my Wife's nice 01 Kodiak. Most importantly, if you know your budget, then be patient and the right quad for you will come along

If it is just cosmetic like plastic and not the frame or suspension, than thats a deal I wouldnt be able to pass up.

My dad recently purchased a 78 cj-5 for 500 bucks.Came with a 4 inch lift, and extra set of brand new eagle aluminum modulars.

The front pinion seal was trashed and a bunch of stuff got in the front diff and ruined the ring and pinnion.(that was done by the previos owner)His buddy parts out jeeps and had a spare dana 30 laying around. So he got that axle converted over to disk like the old axle was.Put new brake calipers had the rotors turned new brake pads and hoses. We put the lift on.It already had a lift but it was just longer shackles. So we used the old steel modulars and cheapo 33's that where on it.

I just took it 4-wheeling for the first time yesterday.I didn't get stuck and I took up and down a very tough creek. As well as some big hill climbs.

Jeeps are very very fun but so are 4-wheelers.

I would recomend a honda 250x.They are great machines.Just like 300ex except kick start and a smaller bore. They run great and handle well to.

Hope U find something

Hey,

exexer - is it really just cosmetic scratches? is there any engine/suspension/brake/etc work that needs to be done? i'm still trying to figure out how to come up with $2k. maybe i could work something out with my dad.

ugly - if you had your choice, which would you rather have? the old CJ to play with or a 4-wheeler? i know where a $700 CJ5 is, already lifted, running, and a little rust. very tempting, but i just don't know.
