If anyone's interested, I checked the '00 XR400 last night, it splits and vents into the air, just like the old bikes.

I'll probably be changing mine, although I am not completely convinced this is the whole problem.

Would you bolt the filter directly onto the case, eliminating the hose? Or would you keep the stock hose and install it somewhere near the air box?

Just take the the white breather box off and put a K&N breather on the end of the hose....secure it with the clamp from the bottle then use a plastic zip tie to hold it up next to the frame.
