If you simply remove the lid and do not compensate for the greatly increased air flow by re-jetting, then yes, you can cause extensive engine damage depending on how lean the engine is. Burned or broken pistons, rings, valves, scored cyl. walls are some of the worst cases. Even bottom end damage if any pieces fall down into it.
