I am not an expert on this, but you son should not be able to tell the difference between the 2. From 32 to 42 is not that much of a differnce. Plus did you empty the tank and carb when you changed the mixture? If you poured the one into a not empty tank it is some mixture between the 2. A mix of 20:1 and 40:1 you will fell some difference. Which one did he say was faster? The 42:1 should be the faster, because the gas is less diluted from the oil and your octane number will be somewhat higher I think.
If you changed pre-mix oils you can fell the difference.

 

Changed pre-mix and ratio's. Also, I didn't empty it fully.
